Donald Ray Burress, Sr., 83 ,of Verdunville peacefully passed away in Logan Regional Medical Center.and went home to Heaven on Friday, December 13,2024.. He was born on November 19, 1941 in Yolyn.
His working life was spent as a machinist working in several machine shops in the Logan area. His hobbies ranged from photography and art in his earlier years to woodworking and construction later on. Don could build anything from a handmade go-kart for his son to a brass and steel chess set for his daughter. He took great pride in the fact that he designed and completed a large addition to his home mostly by himself. He was a lifelong fan of hunting and fishing. In his later years his main hobby was playing solitaire on his Kindle tablet. He would always laugh when speaking of his losing way more games than he won. Don was a man of few words with a sarcastic wit. You could always count on him answering the question, “how have you been?” with, “same ole, same ole.” He didn’t talk much but when he did you could count in it being something very funny or deeply profound. To say that he loved retirement would be an understatement. He spent many hours at Chief Logan State Park fishing…or napping. We could never quite tell the difference.
Don was preceded in death by his father, James Burress and mother, Pearl (Grant) Burress, sisters: Willie Helen Hamilton, Maggie Lee Schoettle, Nancy Sue Lawson, and Betty Lou Alcorn, brothers: Charles Edgar Burress, James Hubert Burress, and Jerry Joe Burress.
Don continues to be loved and remembered by his ex-wife, Donna Sue Lucas of Branchland, son, Donald Burress, Jr. (Jessica Yvonne Whitmore) of Nitro, daughter Shelia Dawnetta Bryant (James David Bryant) of Verdunville, granddaughter Tylah Rachelle Fowler (William Franklin Fowler, III), great granddog Mia Louise Fowler of Verdunville, grandson Ryan Shane Bryant (Amber Jenae Chambers), great granddaughter Madison Grace Bryant, great grandson Jaxon Noah Bryant of Teays Valley, and brother Alvis Glen Burress (Kathy Woods) of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Per his request he will be cremated and the family will have a celebration of life at a later date.
