Maria C. Travassos

SOMERVILLE-Maria C. (Rainha) Travassos, 90, of Somerville passed away Friday, December 13, 2024, surrounded by her loving family following a courageous battle with a lengthy illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Manuel A. Travassos and the cherished daughter of the late Gil Pacheco Rainha and Maria N. (Medeiros) Brum and the step-daughter of the late Manuel Brum.

Born in Ribeira das Tainhas, São Miguel, Açores, Maria immigrated to New Bedford in 1952 before settling in Somerville in 1964.

Senhora Travassos embraced life with warmth, resilience, and devotion to her family. Maria was a dedicated homemaker who enjoyed cooking for her family and took pride in caring for her grandchildren. In her earlier years, she worked as a talented seamstress.

As the matriarch of her family, she is survived by her three daughters: Marilyn Travassos of New Bedford, Dianne Travassos of Medford and Betty Costa and her husband, Rui of Wilmington. She was the adored grandmother of six grandchildren: Michael Correia and his wife, Janelle, Michelle Carreiro and her husband, Altino, Victoria Sorrentino, Felicia Sorrentino, Michael Sorrentino and Dominic Sorrentino as well as three great-grandchildren: Kimberly Medeiros, Tahlia Carreiro and Ansley Correia. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Maria leaves behind a legacy of love and family.

Sra. Travassos was predeceased by her son, the late Victor Travassos; and her siblings, the late Manuel Brum, Antoniette Medeiros and Clotilde Rainha.

Visiting hours in the funeral home Wednesday, December 18 from 5:00-8:00 P.M. Her funeral will be Thursday, December 19 at 8:45 A.M. at the funeral home with a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 10:00 A.M. Interment in St. John Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been committed to the care of AUBERTINE-LOPES FUNERAL HOME, 129 Allen St., New Bedford.
