On June 27, 1952, Janice was gifted to Mary Levett in Breman, Georgia. The duo migrated north with other family members and friends in hope of a better life. They took root in Cincinnati, Ohio, where their tight knit family expanded to include the union of Harold Edmerson to her mother. Janice graduated from Robert A. Taft High School in 1970, then proceeded to matriculate from the University of Cincinnati in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education.
Faith had become a tried stone in her life at an early age. She witnessed first hand the behavior changes and bold moves of the matriarchs in her life. Their faith changed the trajectory of their lives. It made her seek the Lord for herself at the tender age of eight, when she received the gift of the Holy Ghost at Bethlehem Temple Apostolic Church. During these formative years, she established her affinity for music, education and relationships. Music would become the backdrop for a life that was gritty, triumphant and a calling card. The knowledge she accumulated would become a passport that would grant her access into places that a child born of her hardships could only dream. The relationships she forged, nurtured and maintained would last a lifetime and be constant companionship until the very end.
In the summer of 1975, she married Leonard Hill. To this union, two daughters were born, Lenice and Sonya Hill, whom she would have to
raise on her own, when he succumbed to Lupus in the spring of 1988. Her industrious upbringing, skills as a seamstress and the support system that she returned back to in Cincinnati, Ohio is how she handled single motherhood with style and grace.
Being a mother is what helped her become the consummate professional. She taught in the Cincinnati Public and Villa Rica School Districts, reaching many students, in two states, over several decades: Rockdale Elementary, Villa Rica Primary, Eastern Hills Elementary and Millvale Primary Schools and the oversight of students in extra curricular activities. Faith once again would be the reason she would decide to abruptly retire from CPS and go on to reach teachers and students alike as an education coach for the Jobs For Cincinnati Grads Program.
Her ministry would reach far and wide, as well. Upon her return to Cincinnati, she attended Bethel #2 Apostolic Pentecostal Church, where she served in various roles on many committees. Sunday School Superintendent being one she held near and dear to her heart, where she served for over 25 years. She would elevate spiritually to become an Evangelist and serve as Assistant Pastor. She met and wed her second husband, James A. Forrester while working faithfully as a servant leader. To this union, she expanded her family to include bonus daughter, Natasha Parnell (Darren Parnell).
Janice was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Edmerson and both husbands, Leonard Hill and James Forrester.
Janice is survived by: her father, Harold Edmerson, Sr.; her brothers, Harold and John Edmerson, as well as Paul McGhee; two daughters, Lenice and Sonya Hill; two grandsons, Chaaz Hill and Curtis Williams; one grand-daughter, Genesis Williams; and an entire host of nieces and nephews that she was honored to claim, as well as cousins and friends who were more like family.
At every step of the journey, she was a sure depiction of grace. A model of the love God shone on us. May we cherish the time and experiences we have been given.
