Susan Kay Curtiss Obituary

Susan Kay Curtiss, age 73, of Otisville, MI passed away on December 13, 2024, in the comforts of her home. She was born in Brown City, MI on December 26, 1950. She was raised in Melvin and graduated from Yale High School.

Susan enjoyed many things throughout the years. In her younger days, her perseverance and competitive drive made her a valuable player on a local softball team, as well as in a community bowling league. As years passed, she did an incredible job maintaining the most vibrant flower beds surrounding the outside of her beautifully decorated and most welcoming home in Lapeer. She loved playing Skip-Bo with her beloved husband, doing the County Press weekly crossword IN PEN, playing Yahtzee and Solitaire (with or without someone to beat), binge-watching shows she could later talk about with her children and knitting scarves/dish rags/slippers for everyone to receive as gifts around the holidays. An avid reader, in her spare time she enjoyed losing herself in the pages of a John Grisham thriller or Danielle Steel novel. After her husband passed in 2003, Susan her four-legged companion/best friend, Ava, looked forward to spending the cold Michigan winters in the sunny state of Florida, returning home in the summer to enjoy time with family and lifelong friends. She had a knack for making everyone feel welcome in her presence, always lighting up the room with her smile and infectious laugh.

Susan was fiercely independent, unbelievably selfless, insanely hard-working, stronger than any man or woman you'd ever known and amazing at finding the best deals and ways to save a buck or two (she loved her coupons). Sue's love for Christmas was shown in the picturesque winter wonderland she created at home with the many holiday decorations and delicious smells of her homemade Christmas cookies, fudge and peanut brittle. The love she had for her children and grandchildren was unwavering. She was an amazing mother, wife, sister, grandmother/memaw and friend. To know Susan was to love her and to be loved by her was a blessing. God truly broke the mold when he made her, and she will be missed more than any amount of words could ever express.

Susan is survived by her children Chad (Kate) Thom of North Branch, Desirae' (Roger) Skindell of St. Clair Shores, and Cydnee (Charlie) Gramer of Otisville, Toni (Keith) Edwards of Scottville, and Chris (Janelle) Curtiss of Del Rio, TN; grandchildren Jordyn (Luke), Jacob (Jaiden), Austin, Elly, Addison, Maggie, Ally, Madelynn, Colton, Collin, Maksim. Stella, Emiliya, Nadja, Cailynn, Charlee and Callie; brothers George (Kathy) McGuire Jr. and Terry McGuire; nieces and nephews Melissa, Jason, Mickey and Amy; cousins Rosemary, Lesley and Bradly.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents George and Elaine McGuire, husband Rex Curtiss Jr.; cousins Dwight and Michael Robinson; her loyal & loving chocolate lab, Ava Dawn Marie.

Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors - Capstick Chapel in Lapeer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Koolen-de Vries Syndrome Foundation.
