On Friday, December 6th, Alexandra Wojdan passed away peacefully at her home in Florence, NJ. She was surrounded by her family Ann and Johnny Mastin, Tom and Debbie Wojdan, and her caregiver, Eva Mae Newton.
She is survived by her children, Tom Wojdan (wife Debbie), and Ann Mastin (husband Johnny); grandchildren Ian Mastin, Nick Mastin, Danielle Daiutolo (husband David) and Kevin O’Brien; two great-grandsons, Giancarlo Daiutolo and Alessio Daiutolo. She is also survived by her sister, Jagoda Jaminska, and nieces, Kinga Jaminska and Basia Jaminska in Poland.
Alexandra led a full life. She was born in Lwow, Poland (now in Ukraine) to Stanislaw Kordal and Janina (née Sawicka). She lived there until the end of WWII, when her family was resettled to Wroclaw, Poland. Her father did not join them as he was arrested by the Soviets and sent to a Gulag work camp in Siberia. The war years were difficult as food was scarce, and Alexandra's mother was pursued by the Soviet Secret Police (KGB).
Once in Wroclaw, Alexandra went to school and eventually earned two Master’s degrees, one in Pharmacy and one in Pharmacology from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Medicine in Wroclaw. In August 1955, through the persistent efforts of her mother, her father returned from the Soviet Union and rejoined the family.
In 1959, Alexandra visited her Aunt Helen in Camden NJ for an extended period of time. In July, on the ocean liner return trip to Poland, a shipboard romance developed and in August, she married Marian Wojdan, a Pole who had emigrated to Canada after WWII.
Shortly after arriving in Montreal, Alex took a position as a research scientist with Ayerst McKenna in February 1960. She would end up working for the company for 39+ years.
The years in Montreal were among the best of her life. She and Marian raised Tom and Ann, and traveled extensively, especially to Europe. She and Marian were active in Montreal’s Polish community. They enjoyed family visitors from Poland, including her father’s visit in 1974.
In 1984, Alexandra and Marian moved to New Jersey as part of a corporate research relocation. She attended many conferences of the American Heart Association in Dallas, Anaheim, and New York, speaking at several of them. She also co-authored several research papers. She retired in 1999 from Wyeth Laboratories.
Her love for travel continued in her retirement years, traveling to Europe and the Caribbean. In 2002, she was diagnosed with melanoma and again in 2003. The surgeries were successful, enabling her to enjoy Ann and Johnny’s wedding (2002), as well as Tom and Debbie’s (2006). She welcomed the birth of her grandsons, Ian (2003) and Nick (2005). Through Tom’s marriage to Debbie, Danielle and Kevin became her grandchildren as well. Giancarlo (2006) and Alessio (2009) were born to Danielle and Dave Daiutolo, who became her first great-grandchildren.
Alex was a proud, loving, caring grandmother and great grandmother who loved to spoil her grandchildren and enjoy their company and hearing about their adventures. She will be missed terribly.
