Elwin Leroy Martin

Elwin Leroy Martin, 86, aka Al Martin of Portland, ME passed peacefully after a brave battle with COPD on October 20, 2018. Elwin was predeceased by his parents Elwin Leroy Martin Sr. and Edith (Casey) Martin; his sister Dorothy (Martin) Rogers and his wife of 40 years Margaret (Reynolds) Martin. Elwin is survived by his brother Carl Terison of Ocala, FL.; daughter Julie Bernardo and her husband Bernard Bernardo of Poland, ME.; daughter Janette Martin of Waterboro, ME.; daughter Karen Kierstead and her husband Ronald Kierstead of Buxton, ME.; son Alan Martin and his wife Carolyn (Berry) Martin of Wells, ME.; grandchildren Nicole (Bernardo) Weinstein and her husband Paul Weinstein, Chelsea (Bernardo) Deupree and her husband Jonathan Deupree, Alex Foster, Mitchell Foster, Savannah Martin, Isabel Martin and great grandchildren Benjamin and Lydia Weinstein. Al was a respected locksmith and safe expert. His business located on Congress Street in Portland, ME was very successful for many years. He also sold musical instruments and ran a successful gym and massage parlor on Avon Street in Portland. At his residence in Windham where he raised his family he owed and operated a Country Western Store and Ice Cream stand. Al was trained in Texas in the 70’s as a farrier so he could shoe his family’s show horses. Al also cofounded the Maine chapter of the Iron Horsemen Motor Cycle group and enjoyed riding the toy runs on his Harley Davidson. Al’s final days were spent operating his lock smith shop and music store in Norway. He loved going to the Oxford Casino with his family to play the slots. Al lived a colorful life always joking and telling stories. Most of his stories seemed to outrageous to believe until an acquaintance came along and would say Al do you remember when and corroborated every last jaw dropping detail. Al was loved by many and will be missed. A celebration of life will be held November 3rd from 12-3 PM at Dimillo’s Restaurant in Portland.
