Lawrence Luke “Larry” Hayes Jr., age 87 of Hillsdale, and Palm Harbor, Florida, passed away on Friday, November 29, 2024, at Claudia’s Glenn.


Born on February 15, 1937, in Stringtown, Michigan, he was the elder son of the late Doris and Larry Hayes. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue (Stoner) Hayes; two sons, Lawrence (Julie) and Britton (Diana) Hayes; three grandchildren, Davis, Sophia, and Darby.


He is preceded in death by his brother Parke.


Larry graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1955 and Hillsdale College in 1961. While a student at Hillsdale College he announced the Charger football games on WCSR. He was one of the original students to participate in Larry Taylor’s Leadership Workshop. When he was a senior, he was given the privilege of teaching a freshman American heritage class. In 1963 he graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and returned to live in Hillsdale where he practiced law until he retired in 2000, including a term as Hillsdale County Prosecuting Attorney. During the years he practiced law, he served terms as president of the Hillsdale Rotary Club, Hillsdale County United Way, the Hillsdale County March of Dimes, the Hillsdale County Bar Association, and the Hillsdale Golf and Country Club.


Upon retiring in 2000 his wife and he wintered in Palm Harbor, Florida, where he served for a time on the Innisbrook Condominium Association Board of Directors and pursued his passion for golf.


The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of his caregivers at Hillsdale Hospital, the MacGuire Unit, Claudia’s Glenna and Hospice of Hillsdale County who took such good care of him these past few months.


A celebration of life for Larry Hayes will take place at a later date. A private family interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery.


Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Hillsdale County or Hillsdale College. Arrangements have been entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
