Joseph Ivan Peterson Obituary

The funeral service for Joseph Ivan Peterson, 43, of Aberdeen, SD, formerly of Sisseton, SD, will be 2:00pm, Thursday, December 5, 2024, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, with Pastor Leland Armbright officiating. There will also be a funeral at Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton at 2:00pm, Friday, December 6. Burial at will be at Sisseton Memorial Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. Joseph died Wednesday, November 27, at his home in Aberdeen.


Visitation will be one hour prior to each service at the churches.


Joseph Ivan Peterson was born on November 9, 1981, in Watertown SD to David and Donna (Moen) Peterson. Joe was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton SD. Joe attended school in Texas from 1986 to 1992. When the family returned to Sisseton, Joe graduated as an honor student from Sisseton High School in 2000. During high school he played football and was in the band. Joe became an Eagle Scout in 1999 and continue with joining The Order of Arrow. While in high school he worked at Stillson’s Gas Station. After high school in 2000 Joe worked summers for SD GF & Parks, while going on to Northern State University where he graduated in 2006 with a degree in Bachelor Music Education and a minor in Math. Joseph taught High School Band in Britton & Winner SD. While in college Joe worked at Target and continued for a total of 17 years. Joe worked for Schwans Consumer Brands Inc. as a driver to area stores. Currently Joe was employed at Linde Gas and Welding where in October he became District Store Manager. 


Joe was united in marriage to Alicia Dolejsi on May 30, 2009, at the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD Where Joe was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD and then when he moved to Aberdeen, he was a member and huge asset to Music Ministry of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Joe hobbies were wood craft, welding, camping, restoring musical instruments. Joe and Alicia participated in the Renaissance Festival where Joe made most of their costumes, and he also made all the costumes for Merry Tuba Xmas. Joe was involved in several area music organizations, North Area Honor Band-High School at NSU, Merry Tuba Christmas for 28 years, NSU Marching Wolves, NSU Symphonic Band & Wind Ensemble, NSU Community Concert Band, NSU Jazz Band, NSU Wolf Pack, NSU Dixieland Jazz Band, NSU Concert Choir, NSU Community Tuba Ensemble, Aberdeen Community Choir, Aberdeen Living Christmas Tree, Aberdeen Civic Symphony Orchestra, Good Shepherd Choir, Exultation Bells, and Praise Band. Joseph passed away at his home unexpectedly on November 27, 2024.

Joseph is survived by his wife Alicia Peterson of Aberdeen, SD; his parents David and Donna Peterson of Sisseton. SD; grandmothers Kathleen Johnson of Sisseton, SD and Marcia Peterson of Sisseton, SD; uncle and aunts, Randy (Shelly) Peterson of Sisseton, SD, Evan (Jeannie) Peterson of St. Peter, MN, Clayton (Lori) Moen of Sisseton, SD, Michael (Romel) Moen of Wahpeton, ND, Sue (Mark) Fischer of Sisseton. SD; and David “Butch” Wegleitner of Lake City. SD; father and mother-in-law, Duane and Kathy Dolejsi of Milbank, SD; sisters-in-law, Megan (Wess) Grimm of Bloomington, MN, and Jennifer (Dale) Thiel of Milbank. SD; one niece, Solveig Grimm of Bloomington. MN. and Joe’s beloved lab dog Alberti Bass since 2017.

Joseph was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Sherman Peterson; maternal grandfathers Clayton Moen Sr. and Don Johnson; two aunts Leisha Moen and Tanya Wegleitner.
