Theona J. Taylor, a lifelong figure in the Whitinsville community passed away peacefully on November 27, 2024, after a period of declining health. Theona's life was a testament to devotion, both to her family, friends and to those she served throughout her career.
Born on August 14, 1940, Theona was the beloved daughter of the late John and Annie (Baker) DeJong and stepdaughter of the late Henry Kooistra. She grew up in Whitinsville alongside her brothers, Stuart and Gordon DeJong. Her brother Stuart, a resident of Whitinsville, who helped greatly with her care, was a source of strength, comfort and familiarity for her. Gordon and his wife Barbara, also residents of Whitinsville, remained close to Theona throughout her life. Special thanks and gratitude to Tom and Valerie Kuik and their family for years of love, fellowship, hospitality and care for Theona.
Theona's heart found its match in Robert J. Taylor. He was on leave from the U.S. Navy docked in Newport, RI and he and a friend drove to Whitinsville to visit. The only guidelines for a weekend stay with complimentary lodging and food, was that they had to go to church on Sunday. Theona and Bob met at church.
The two were united in marriage, building a life filled with love and mutual respect. Although Robert preceded her in death, their shared memories continued to be a source of joy and solace for Theona. Together, they raised three children—Bryan J. Taylor and his wife Lori of Florida, Neal Taylor and his wife Christine of Douglas, and the late Karyn J. Taylor beloved daughter, sister and friend to Kathy and Jan whom Theona appreciated, loved and enjoyed their continued visits and care.
Her role as grandmother to Addison and Cole, was one she cherished most deeply. Theona’s extended family included 7 nieces and nephews, Gina, Scott, Amy, Derrick, Holly, Darren and Candice.
Professionally, Theona dedicated many years of service as a nurse's aide at Beaumont Nursing Home, where she earned admiration and gratitude of countless families for her compassionate care.
Theona found joy in the simplicity of life. She took camping trips to the ocean with her family and lifelong friends from her church community. After retiring she took pleasure and comfort in wintering in Florida, where she basked in the winter sunshine with friends and family. Theona also had a fondness for puzzles and word finds a hobby that reflected her patient and thoughtful nature.
A woman of strong faith, Theona lived her beliefs through her actions including fellowship, kindness, charity, and love in her daily life. She was a lifelong member of Pleasant Street Christian Reformed Church where she formed long lasting friendships and found spiritual fulfillment throughout her 84 years of life.
