Barbara West Billert Obituary

Barbara West Billert, age 86, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 28, 2024. She was born in Atlanta December 12, 1937, to the late Jonathan Royal West and Lucille Boyd West and grew up in Cedartown, GA. Barbara lived a life filled with love, service, and dedication to her family, faith, and community.


Barbara was a graduate of Cedartown High School and earned her undergraduate degree from Furman University in 1960 and went on to complete a master’s degree at West Georgia College in 1978. She was a devoted educator, teaching at various schools in Carroll County and Dallas, TX, retiring from Villa Rica High School as Media Specialist in 2000. A lifelong learner herself, Barbara was passionate about reading and always had a book in hand, enthusiastically recommending great reads to friends and family. Her other great passions were travel and cheering on Alabama football.


Barbara was a member of First Baptist Church of Carrollton. After retiring from teaching, she continued to share her time and talents with her community. She volunteered for 10 years at the Neva Lomason Library, bringing her love of books and knowledge to others. Additionally, she contributed her time to the Carroll County Soup Kitchen and Open Hands Ministry.


Barbara’s kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith left a lasting impact on all who knew her. She was a cherished mother, aunt, sister, and friend whose impact will be long be felt by those who were fortunate enough to cross her path.


Barbara is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph “Jody” Billert and Kristen Fernekes of Alexandria, VA; her sister, Linda West Plunk of Hendersonville, TN; nephews, Matt Plunk (Grace) of Destin, FL; Chris Plunk (Elena) of Santa Clarita, CA; niece, Laurie Plunk Dishman of Hendersonville, TN; and, numerous cousins, and great nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her infant sister.


A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 11 AM with Dr. David Hughes officiating.


A reception will follow the service in Burns Hall for a time of fellowship with the family.


Inurnment will be in Carroll Memory Gardens.
