Michael Ray Lawson, Sr., affectionately known as Mike, passed away peacefully on November 26th, 2024, at the age of 81. He spent his final moments surrounded by his loving family at Lindsay Place in Pennsville, New Jersey. Born on February 2, 1943, in Galax, Virginia, Mike's arrival into the world was a special occasion, as he was delivered by none other than his grandmother in the comfort of his parents' home. He was the eldest son of the late Carl and Anna Belle Payne Lawson, who nurtured his early years with love and guidance.
Throughout his life, Mike faced the profound loss of loved ones, including his parents, three brothers—Donald, Ronald, and Neal—and four sisters: Janet Fay Lawson, Lois Lawson, Elizabeth (Betty) Adams, and Beatrice Thorp. Their absence left an indelible mark on his heart, but he carried their memories with him as he forged his own path.
Mike's professional journey was marked by a variety of leadership roles across several esteemed organizations, including General Motors, Nurses 'n Kids, Delaware Park, and First Data. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to establish and operate a small moving business in Elsmere, Delaware, where he built lasting relationships with customers and colleagues alike.
One of the defining aspects of Mike's life was his unwavering commitment to service in the United States Army and National Guard, where he dedicated over 20 years of his life. He proudly served in the 42nd Infantry Division and the 198th Signal Battalion, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. His military career included significant deployments during the Vietnam War and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. Mike's dedication to his country was matched only by his involvement in his community; he was a respected Master Mason with the Ionic Lodge and a proud member of the Nur Shrine.
Mike had a zest for life that was reflected in his many interests. He loved to travel and explore new places, enjoyed dining out at various restaurants, and had a particular fondness for country music. However, nothing brought him more joy than spending quality time with his family, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
He is survived by his three beloved children, Michelle Brown (Patrick) of Wilmington, DE; Michael Lawson, Jr. (Vicky) of Hockessin, DE; and Lorri Kinney (Patrick, Sr.) of Clayton, DE. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren: Blake Brown (Stephanie), Allison Brown, Courtney Tracey (Tyler), Patrick Kinney, Jr., Alexander Lawson (Gia), Darian Kinney, Wyatt Brown, Matthew Lawson, and John Lawson. Mike also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren: Derrick, Jackson, Kendall, Skylar, Natalie, Hayden, Austin, and Trent. Additionally, he is survived by his brother, Richard, who resides in Oswego, IL, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and a vast network of friends and family who will deeply miss his presence.
A memorial service to honor Mike's life will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, located at 3200 Limestone Road in Wilmington. Family and friends are invited to attend the viewing on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 11:30 AM, followed by a Masonic service at 12:30 PM. A procession will then lead to the Delaware Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, where Mike will be laid to rest with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mike’s memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children or to the Alzheimer's Association. Your support and kindness during this difficult time will be greatly appreciated by his family.
