He was born on July 20, 1933, in Oakford, IL the son of the late Samuel and Alberta Reitzel Lynn. He married Valerie Hayden on June 27, 1954, in Oakford, IL, and she passed away on September 30, 2015. He was also preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters and one grandson-n-law.

Surviving are their children Kathy (Tom) Degenhart of Metamora, Michael Lynn of Roanoke, Lee Ann (Rafael Arias-Rivera) Arias of Sunnyland, and Leticia Padilla of Sunnyland. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Further surviving are two sisters, Bette Lynn of Manito, IL, and Nancy Schaeffer of Sunnyland.

An honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Navy, Joe's dedication to his country was rivaled only by his commitment to his Lord, his family and community.

After moving to the Peoria area in 1961, he honed his craft as a meat cutter, a skill he proudly carried through his years at Adams Street Supermarket, Mel’s Market, and finally Nyman’s Market, from which he retired in 1992. His work was not only a profession but a way to serve and connect with the people in his city.

Joe found joy and fellowship in the lanes of Plaza Lanes in Washington, where he enthusiastically participated in various bowling leagues. As an avid fisherman, he braved all weather conditions, determined to cast his line in rain or shine. He shared his faith journey with congregations at Highview Church of God and later at Crossroads Global Methodist Church. Throughout his life, Joseph's heart was fullest when surrounded by his family and celebrating the achievements of his beloved grandchildren.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at Crossroads Global Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to his service. Burial of cremated remains will be at a later date at Oakford Cemetery in Oakford, IL.
