MARY OSELAND
ALTON – Mary Grace Oseland, 77, passed away peacefully at 2:16 a.m., Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at her son’s home in Collinsville, surrounded by the unwavering love of her family. A woman of incredible strength, kindness, and humor, Mary left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Born on September 21, 1947, in Alton, Mary was the cherished daughter of the late Oren D. and Ina Marie (Downs) Adams. Mary was a lifelong Alton area resident, and was a proud member of the Alton High School Class of 1965. Following her graduation, she pursued her passion for caregiving, earning her CNA certification and dedicating 50 years to caring for the lives of others.
On June 11, 1966, Mary married her soulmate, Larry James Oseland, in Alton. Their love story spanned nearly 53 years, built on a foundation of laughter, partnership, and devotion to their family. Together, they raised their children in a home filled with warmth and joy. Though Larry preceded her in death on June 11, 2019, Mary continued to carry the light of their love, treasuring the memories they created.
Mary’s career in healthcare began at Alton Memorial Hospital and took her to Christian Hospital Northeast, ultimately leading to a fulfilling tenure in Home Health, where she provided compassionate care to her patients. Even as her health began to decline, Mary’s unwavering commitment to her work and her patients continued until her retirement in October 2023.
In addition to her healthcare career, Mary became a beloved fixture at Fast Eddie’s Fried Chicken in Alton, where she worked for 35 years. Her dedication, sense of humor, and vibrant personality made her a treasured part of both her workplace and her community - whether caring for patients or serving up smiles, Mary poured her heart into everything she did, gaining countless friendships along the way.
For Mary, family was everything. She was the beating heart of her family, pouring love and energy into her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was their biggest cheerleader, their fiercest protector, and their source of unconditional love. Vacationing, celebrating milestones and holidays, or simply spending time together were among her greatest joys, and her loved ones will carry those precious memories forever.
Running a close second to her love for her family was Mary’s love for the thrill of gambling. A self-proclaimed casino enthusiast, Mary found immense joy in her trips to the slots, where she often brought along friends and family to share in the fun. Even in her final days, she dreamed of just one more trip, a testament to her zest for life and her playful spirit.
Mary’s legacy lives on through her loving family: her son and daughter in-law, Michael and Amber Oseland of Collinsville; her daughter, Laura Oseland of Bethalto; her stepdaughter, Carolyn (Jeremy) Gilland of South Roxana; five adoring grandchildren, Joseph and Dylan Benson, Justin Mulliman, Kadi (Branden) Henderson and Chase (Sarah) Zezoff; and two precious great-granddaughters, Alice Benson and Elaina Jo Henderson. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Adams of Rosewood Heights; her sister-in-law, Carolyn Grant of Alton; and her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Rene Oseland of Cottage Hills.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mary was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, William “Bill” and Delores Adams.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 3, from 4 p.m. until the time of funeral services at 6 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
Mary will be laid to rest privately at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.
