In Remembrance of Hernando Garay
Hernando Garay, lovingly known as "Papi," passed away surrounded by his cherished family. Born November 27, 1946, in Anolaima, Colombia, Hernando embraced his rich culture with pride and joy. As a young man, he made the courageous decision to leave his homeland in pursuit of the American Dream, immigrating to the United States with little more than hope and determination.
Hernando built a beautiful life for himself and his family through resilience and unwavering dedication. Though he began his journey in a new country, his work ethic and passion for cooking propelled him forward.
Cooking was not just a skill for him—it was a love language. His meals brought people together, not just to eat, but to connect, laugh, and create cherished memories. Those fortunate enough to taste his food often remarked that it didn’t just fill their stomachs—it touched their souls. His time as a chef, from Leo’s Restaurant to the Board of Education, showcased his ability to turn simple ingredients into something extraordinary, always served with love.
Family was the cornerstone of his life, and he worked tirelessly to provide for his beloved wife of 50 years, their children, and grandchildren. His greatest joy came from gathering loved ones around the table, cooking delicious meals, and ensuring everyone was left with full hearts and happy memories.
To his family, Hernando was the king of their castle and the heart of their home. He often expressed gratitude for the opportunities he found in the United States, saying, "God bless America because we are free here to work and make a better life for ourselves." Hernando instilled in his children and grandchildren the importance of education and hard work, teaching them that dedication and knowledge are the keys to building a better life.
Hernando’s legacy lives on through his devoted wife Maritza A. Garay, his three daughters—Maritza Garay, Rosela Garay, and Darleny Garay—and his seven cherished grandchildren: Desiree Garay, Samantha Ramsey, Julian Rodriguez, Victoria Rodriguez, Rome Vargas Garay, Belize Vargas Garay, and Ariel Sanchez. He is now at peace and reunited in spirit with his beloved son, Ismael “Izzy” Garay, who will forever remain a part of the family’s memories.
Hernando’s passing holds profound meaning, symbolizing the completion of a beautiful, full-circle journey. It is as though he chose this significant day to remind his loved ones to celebrate life, embrace each moment, and honor the legacy of love and laughter he leaves behind.
Hernando’s memory is one of triumph, proving that the American Dream is not just about success, but about love, sacrifice, and the countless lives touched along the way. This will forever inspire those who knew him to live with love, work hard, and cherish family above all.
Rest in peace, Papi. You were the chef of our hearts, the light in our lives, and the true meaning of family.
