Nelvin Gary was born on June 25, 1942, on his parents’ farm near Hospers, one of six children born to Albert and Jessie (Wieringa) Miedema. He was raised in rural Hospers and attended the Hospers Christian School and Hospers High School, graduating from the Floyd Valley High School in Alton. In 1964, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving for two years before being honorably discharged in 1966.

On March 27, 1967, he was united in marriage to Sharol Diane Williams at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. They made their home in Hospers, where they raised their family and “Nick” worked as an insurance agent operating out of their home. After their children had left the house, Nick and Sharol moved to a home in Sheldon. Sharol passed away on October 19, 2022, after more than 55 years of marriage.

Mr. Miedema was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers, where he served as a deacon and an elder and taught catechism. He also served on the boards of the Hospers Christian School and the Unity Christian High School in Orange City. He liked to stay current on the news and regularly followed politics, world events, and sports. He also enjoyed walking the Sheldon trails. In earlier years, he enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball with his brothers and walking the perimeter of the Miedema farm. Nick regularly attended his grandchildren’s activities and was especially proud of his great-grandson, whose middle name is Nicholas, named after him.

Survivors include three children, Nicky, and her husband, Jerry Cline, of Cedar Rapids; Lisa Clark, of Marion; and Scott Miedema, and his wife, Jennifer, of Ireton; six grandchildren, Braeden, Easton, and Camryn Clark; Erin, and her husband, Drew Gustafson; and Megan and Sydney Miedema; one great-grandson, Samuel Nicholas Gustafson; a brother and his wife, Andrew and Joan Miedema; seven sisters-in-law, Mary Miedema; Sharlene Miedema; Janice, and her husband Russell Linstrom; Marian Williams; Kathy Williams; Bonnie Brink; and Betty Van Meeteren; a brother-in-law and his wife, Bill and Melissa Williams; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Vyrl Clark; a sister and her husband, Berdena and Kenneth Roos; three brothers, Edward Miedema, and his wife, Lucille; Henry Miedema; and Robert Miedema; and four brothers-in-law, Thomas Williams; Kenneth Williams; Rodney Brink; and Rodney Van Meeteren.

Memorials will be given to The Gospel Mission in Sioux City.
