John T West, beloved husband of Lisa West (nee Bowden), of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at the age of 70 years.

John was born in Montreal, QC, on May 11, 1954, the middle child of a family of five children. His aptitude for mechanical systems and interest in engineering led him to Dawson College, where he graduated with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology in 1975.

John moved to Calgary, AB, in 1976 and joined the Calgary Fire Department, graduating top of his class in May 1977. He retired as a Captain in 2008 after 31 years of service. During that time, John served in a wide variety of roles in the department, including as an EMT and on the HUSAR, high-angle rescue, and hazardous materials teams. One of the highlights of John’s distinguished career was his designing of the Calgary Fire Department Flag, which continues to fly to this day.

John married his beloved wife Lisa in 1988 and was an extraordinarily dedicated husband and father. John accomplished much throughout his life and was particularly proud of his family.

Besides his loving wife of 36 years, John is survived by his sons, Tyler (Shannon Campbell) and Scott (Khatrina West), as well as two precious grandchildren, Cooper and Willow West, all of Calgary, AB.

John is also survived by his brother Edward West (Karen) of Riverview, NB; Laura Joyce (Doug) of Hansport, NS; and Anne-Marie Botrill (Gordon) of Forestburg, AB.

John is also survived by Lisa’s three remaining siblings, brother-in-law Maurice Bowden (Kathy), sister-in-law Maxine Bowden, and sister-in-law Betty Johnson (Robert), all of Diligent River, NS; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

John was predeceased by his parents, John and Dorothy West, and his brother Eric West.

John’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Patricia Tang, Dr. Kelli Taylor, and the staff at the High River Community Cancer Centre. Also, a heartfelt thank you to the amazing palliative care team nurses, Lindsey and Melissa, and the LPN and HCA staff of Saige Homecare.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
