James Robert Raper Obituary

James Robert Raper, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024, in Bath, North Carolina, at the age of 87. Born on September 20, 1937, in Wilson, North Carolina, James lived a full and vibrant life dedicated to family, hard work, and his community.

James began his career as a tobacco farmer, where he worked tirelessly, nurturing the land with dedication and skill. His career path later led him to become a Sales Manager for Tri-State Distributors and an Insurance Agent, roles in which he was known for his integrity, diligence, and a warm smile that welcomed everyone.

A proud member of the National Guard, James held a deep respect for his country and was always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a man of many passions, enjoying the thrill of traveling, the excitement of auctions, and the serenity found on boats. James was also famous for hosting his yearly 4th of July party, a beloved tradition that brought together family and friends in joyous celebration.

James had a keen eye for photography, capturing moments that would turn into lifetime memories. Perhaps nothing brought him more joy than sharing ice cream sandwiches with his great-grandsons Finn and Fisher, creating sweet moments that will forever be treasured. He also enjoyed his bible study and daily outings with his family friend and nurse Hallie Whitfield.

James was predeceased by his beloved wife, Judith Ann Pearson Raper; his parents, James and Estelle Raper; and his son, James "Greg" Gregory Raper. He leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly: his daughter, Judith Allison Hennasey; his son, Jason Robert Raper, and wife Laura; his grandchildren, Judith Shyla Gibbs and husband Neal, Shelby Raper, Joshua Hennasey, and Lindsay Cook; his grandchildren Stephen James Mehalek and Chelsea Anne Mehalek Tucker and his cherished great-grandsons, Finn and Fisher Gibbs, James will also be missed by his most trusted nurse and long time friend Hallie Gibbs Whitfield.

James Robert Raper will be remembered for his unwavering love, his infectious laughter, and the legacy of kindness he leaves behind. No matter what the situation he was always willing to give back to the community and those in need. May he rest in peace, reunited with those who have gone before him, and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024, from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM at Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of James, to share stories and celebrate a life well-lived.
