Passed peacefully at the Lionel Kelland Hospice in Grand Falls-Windsor, on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, with family and friends by his side. Robert (Bob) was 85 years of age.
Predeceased by his beloved wife, Linda, of 48 years, parents, John and Nina Aitken, parents-in-law, Harry and Vera May, brother, John Aitken and sister-in-law, Denise Aitken. Leaving to mourn are his son, Kent (Jennifer Wall), grandchildren, Sophie and Will Aitken, in-laws Gloria Lalonde, Sheila (Bob) Hanley, Kent (Christine) May, Linda Combden, nephews Jerrod and Sheldon Lalonde, Johnny Aitken, Ian and Adam May, niece Laurie Aitken, and Deidre Sullivan and Erika Stiner (formerly Paddock) who he loved as his own family. Also left to mourn is his dear friend and companion, Vonnie Hemeon.
Bob’s 30-year teaching career, apart from two years in Robinsons and one year in Springdale, was spent entirely in his hometown of Botwood, where he taught Social Studies, History and Art, and served many years as Vice-Principal (Botwood Senior High and Botwood Collegiate) and Principal (Botwood Junior High).
In addition to teaching, volunteerism was one of Bob’s greatest passions. He was a proud and dedicated 50 plus year member of both the Botwood Lions Club and the Botwood Masonic Lodge, serving most offices in both groups. He was honored to receive the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest achievement award in Lionism, for his 55 years of service to the Club. Bob particularly loved his role as Chair for the Lion’s Youth Speaking Contest, witnessing hundreds of teenagers benefiting from this experience.
Bob’s volunteerism included eight years with the South and Central Health Foundation, serving five years as President. He then became a member of the Botwood Mural Arts Society, taking on the role of Secretary and proudly witnessing the unveiling of the beautiful murals in town.
The musical training Bob received as a youth led to his helping with school choirs and accompanying young singers at music festivals. For many years, he served as organist and choir director at St. James Anglican Church. After his retirement from teaching, Bob enjoyed many years teaching piano lessons to children.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Lane’s Retirement Living in Botwood, and especially to Dr. Campbell and the entire care team at the Lionel Kelland Hospice. Words cannot express our gratitude for the quality of care that he received during his final days at the Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s memory to the St. James Anglican Church in Botwood or the Lionel Kelland Hospice in Grand Falls-Windsor.
