Mary Magalene Woosley Obituary

Mary Woosley, born on November 13, 1938, in Pike County, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024, with her beloved daughter, Martha, by her side.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Will and Martha (Maynard) Blackburn; siblings: Albert, Adrian, Dike, Jesse, Willie, James, Gracie, Janie, Helen, Frances, Irene, and Ocie.

A vibrant and adventurous spirit, Mary led a life enriched by her love for travel, meaningful work, and deep connections with family and friends. Mary was the beloved wife of the late Lundy Woosley. Together, they shared a love of fishing and created a lifetime of cherished memories. Her journey took her across the country to places like California, Florida, Ohio, South Carolina, Kentucky, and West Virginia, where she cultivated lasting friendships.

Mary had a fulfilling career, and her favorite job was at Bailey Lumber, where she often bragged that she could “build a house on paper” by expertly estimating materials. She took great pride in her work and loved sharing stories about her time there.

She was a devoted mother to her four children: Martha Lou Blackburn Curry (married to Claude “June Bug”) of Lorado, WV; James “Jimmy” Canterbury of Morganton, NC; Daniel “Pat Boone” Canterbury (and his significant other, Lois) of Grapeville, PA; and Adam Wayne Canterbury, who resided in Ohio and preceded her in death; she also has bonus children: Rondle, Junior, Billy, Betty, Dorothy, Sharon, Geraldine, Rosemary, and Shirley, also bonus grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of Ohio; Mary was a proud grandmother to Marlynda (Andrew) Arnett of Clarksburg, WV; Montana (Frank) McCormick of Man, WV; Blake (Marie) Adkins of Morganton, NC; and Amy Jessica Canterbury of Morganton, NC. She adored her great-grandson, Gavin Arnett, who brought her immense joy. She is also leaving behind a host of nephews and nieces, who lovingly called her “Aunt Maggie,” and her special nephew, who felt more like a brother, Willis-Ray Haws, whose friendship brought her comfort and laughter; special friends: Connie (late Ed) White; caregiver: Ada Lowe.  Mary had a nurturing love for animals, especially her beloved dog, Tiny, and her black cat, Coalie, who was a constant source of joy.

Friends may gather with the family Saturday, November 30, 2024, from 11:00 AM till 12:00 PM in the chapel of Mounts Funeral Home where funeral services will commence at 12:00 PM.  Her nephews, David Fleming and Rev. Luther Fletcher, will lovingly lead her service.

Burial will follow in the Lester Family Cemetery at Grundy, VA.

Mary will be carried to her resting place by her family and friends.

The family would like to extend a gracious thank you to the staff at Trinity Nursing Home for their compassionate care during Mary’s final days, as well as a heartfelt thank you to longtime family friend, Dr. Zackery Asbury, for the tailored and compassionate care he provided. Special thanks are also extended to Shelly Fizer and staff at LRMC Wound Care for their dedicated weekly care, which brought comfort and support to Mary.

Mary’s legacy of love, resilience, and humor will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
