Funeral services for Howard H. Martell, 88, of Aberdeen, SD, will be 10:30am, Thursday, October 25, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, Aberdeen, with Pastor Mike Jacobson officiating. Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Howard died Saturday, October 20, 2018, at Avera Mother Joseph Manor in Aberdeen, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Howard H. Martell was born June 4, 1930, to Jacob and Magda (Mohr) Martell on the family farm in Hosmer, SD. He attended country school near where he lived and continued farming until his mother died in the early 60s. On June 6, 1965, Howard married Hazel Shear Diede in Madison, SD after they met while he was working construction. They made their home in Aberdeen where he worked as a custodian at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital and for the Coca-Cola Company. Later he worked in highway maintenance for the Department of Transportation until he retired. Howard and Hazel would often play cards, listen to music, and play nickel bingo. After retirement Howard started going to auctions and collecting things to restore and resell. He would often trade these items during his yearly trip to Arizona. Grateful for having shared Howard’s life are his step-children: Marcie (Doug) Spielmann, Janice (Steve) Thayer, Gary (Linda) Deide, and Deb (Greg) Bjork; many step-grandchildren; brother, Harry (Vivian) Martell; and many nieces and nephews.
