Johanna (Annie) Catharina Nieuwkerk, 91, of Selkirk, Manitoba passed away on the evening of Tuesday, November 19, 2024. She was predeceased by her brother Tonnie Lange and her husband of 67 years, Bastiaan (Bob) Nieuwkerk. Johanna is survived by her sons Bastiaan and Richard (Keri) Nieuwkerk; grandchildren Alexis and Coby Nieuwkerk; her brother Bastiaan Lange (Gonnie), who resides in the Netherlands; and other extended family remaining in the Netherlands.

Johanna was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands on June 24, 1933. She met Bob in 1947 and they spent the next 8 years together travelling through Europe on their motorcycle and spending time with family. They married and decided to move to Canada in 1955, where they welcomed their sons in 1957 and 1959. Their family settled in Selkirk where Johanna spent her time as a homemaker. Johanna also worked for Daerwood Motors, which she and Bob proudly owned. Once her sons were out on their own, Johanna also worked for the Betel Home in Selkirk, which she greatly enjoyed. 

Johanna enjoyed years of camping in the Big Whiteshell with her family and friends. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, watching WWE wrestling, playing games on her iPad, and for the majority of her retirement years, could be found “window-shopping” daily in uptown Selkirk. 

She will be remembered by her loved ones for her kindness and sense of humour, and will be greatly missed by those who knew her. 

The Nieuwkerk family would like to thank the nurses at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre for the care and compassion they showed while watching over her during her final days. As well as a special thank you to homecare, specifically Brandi and Carmen, who always brightened her day. 

While deeply saddened by their loss, the Nieuwkerk family is happy that Johanna is finally reunited with the love of her life.

As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held.
