Roderick Steven Moores Obituary

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Roderick (Rod) Steven Moores of Port Maitland, after a 10-year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Rod was born in Yarmouth, October 24, 1947, to parents Margaret Louise (Lovitt) Moores and Malcom Ray Moores. He left us November 18, 2024, at age 77.

Rod was a man of great faith. He was a spiritual man, but not denominational, exploring many religions of the world and practicing his faith through reading, prayer, attending church, and his daily meditation practice.

As a young man, Rod loved to play basketball, ride his motorcycle, and he played trumpet in the high school band. He was Santa Claus on CJLS radio for several years, loved going to Y camp as a child, and worked summers on the MV Bluenose between Yarmouth and Bar Harbour, Maine.

His zest for life and sense of fun continued into adulthood where he was physically active as a runner, a swimmer, and going to the gym on a regular basis. He loved to sing and dance. He read good books by some of the world’s great authors. Rod was an avid outdoors man. He canoed and kayaked, and he loved to sail on St Mary’s Bay, loving nothing more than watching the sails catch the wind and the feeling of the boat as it gained quiet momentum over the water. He enjoyed spending his time working in the woods on his woodlot and looked forward to taking Peter and Andrew wilderness camping at Keji and going on his annual canoe trips with friends in The Tobeatic. Some of his other great outdoor adventures included his 5-day canoe trip with family from Whitehorse to Dawson City on the Yukon River, and as a member of the family team in a bicycle relay race from Haines Junction Yukon to Haines Alaska, when he had to be reminded - it was a race, please don’t stop to take pictures! He also loved his winter get aways in Florida with Susan where he swam in the ocean every day, making good friends there. Rod didn’t organize the trips, but no one had a better time than he did, enjoying the time with family, seeing new things, and exploring new places. When not outdoors or travelling, he could be found enjoying his family and playing with his grandchildren. No one could play and be as much fun as Grampie. And he gave the world’s best hugs.

In his professional life, Rod cared deeply about the clients he worked with in his chosen profession as a Family Therapist at Family and Children Services of Yarmouth County. His kindness, compassion and passion for helping people continued through the course of his disease, when even at Nakile, he was often found trying to comfort other residents when they were upset.

Rod was also a well-respected landlord in the town of Yarmouth. Many tenants said he was the best landlord they ever had.

Rod will be forever remembered for his generosity of heart, kind nature, and gentle soul. In his presence, a person felt accepted, they felt safe, they felt seen.

Left to mourn are his wife of 54 years, Susan; his family Heidi (Krishna, Riali and Aurora); Peter (Ola, Mila, Hudson); Andrew; and his sister Andra (Irvin). He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Skipper, and son-in-law Dean.

Rod’s family wishes to express their gratitude to Yarmouth Argyle Home Support Services and Nakile Home for Special Care for their outstanding support and care.

Rod was a man who enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. In keeping with that, there will be a simple memorial service Sunday, November 24,2024 at 2 p.m. from the Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Rev A.D Bill Newell Officiating. A private interment will take place in the Port Maitland – Beaver River Cemetery. Those who may not be able to attend the service will be able to view the webcast at https://www.sweenysfuneralhome.net/

Family flowers only. Donations in memory of Rod can be made to the Nakile Home for Special Care “Bus Fund” to support their campaign for purchasing an accessible bus.
