CHESTER, CT – HARRY R. HOWARD passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at his residence in Chester, Connecticut. He was 87 years old.
Born in Newark, NJ, to Michael and Beatrice (née Block) Howard, then lived in Florham Park, NJ for thirty-five years where he raised his family. He and his wife then moved to Chatham, MA for twenty years, and recently moved to Chester, CT.
Harry was a self-employed attorney for 65 years. He received his law degree from Rutgers University Law School, and his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
Harry was President of New Jersey Y Camps, President of Liberty Young Men’s Association, and Educational Officer of Power Squadron in Elizabeth and Florham Park, NJ.
He was a respected trial attorney and was known for his roles which included the Jolly Green Giant and the senator in Lil Abner in the Florham Park Players community theater. Harry was an avid sailor and artist. He spent many summers sailing from New York to Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard with his wife and their Dinty Moore Stew. It was later in his life when he began painting and was prolific in his work which focused mainly on nautical and beach themes, and his grandchildren. He had a wonderful sense of humor and his family meant everything to him. “Happy Harry,” the name he had as a camp counselor, was happiest when surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren.
Harry is predeceased by his parents, Michael and Beatrice Howard.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Suzanne (née Kagan) Howard of Chester, CT; his son, Kenneth Wilan of Berkeley CA; his daughter, Karen Evans and her husband, Julian, of Ivoryton, CT; his brother, Arthur Howard of West Palm Beach, FL; and his grandchildren, Madelyn Evans, Jeremy Evans, Adam Wilan, Jack Wilan, Sarah Wilan.
A chapel service will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024, at 11:45 am, at MOUNT SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPELS, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, NJ, followed by interment at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge. For directions, please view our “Events” listed below.
