John Robert Jones, 77, of Ashland, IL passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2024, at his home.
He was born July 16, 1947, in Ashland, the son of John B. “Buzz” and Mary Lucille (Bordenkircher) Jones. He married Elizabeth Ann McKean on June 10, 1972, in Bradford, and she survives.
He is also survived by three daughters and three sons, Jennifer C. (Gary) Sinks of Springfield, Jeremy Drew (Heather) Jones of Magnolia, TX, Maureen M. (Troy) Smith of Monroe County, MO, Daniel R. Jones of Ashland, Nicholas M. (Russell Ann) Jones of Ashland, and Denise C. (David) Manjarrez of Bloomington; twelve grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Christine (Ted) Deen of South Jacksonville. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister Catherine Bernet.
Mr. Jones was a 1965 graduate of Ashland High School. He then attended Springfield Junior College before graduating from Quincy College. He then was drafted and served in the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War. He served in South Korea as an accountant during his service. He owned and operated his family’s business, Jones Boys Market, until his retirement. John was a lifelong member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Ashland, where he sang in the choir. He had been a member of American Legion, VFW, and Jaycees. He was a very generous charitable community giver, enjoyed gardening, and loved spending time at their cabin with his family.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 12 noon, Friday, Nov. 22, 2024, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, with burial at St. Augustine Cemetery. The family will greet friends 10 a.m.-12 noon at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. Augustine Catholic Church or to St. Augustine Cemetery. The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland is handling the service.
