Joan M Rockett

Joan Marie Rockett, of Nantucket, it is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Marie Rockett, our beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She departed peacefully at home in Nantucket, MA on October 14 at the age of 93 with family by her side.

The daughter of the late Gerard and Kathleen Cochrane (Murphy), Joan was born and raised in Sharon, Mass. She is survived by her brothers Edward and Charles Cochrane, her children Kathleen Rockett (late husband Gary Zimmerman), Suzanne Rockett, James Rockett, Daniel Rockett, grandchildren Jeremy, Kyle, Bryan, Christopher, John, Patrick, great-grandchildren Cayce, Edward, Eleanor, Hadley, Madeline, numerous nieces and nephews and neighborhood friends. She is preceded in death by her two sons Edward Rockett (Cheryl) and John Rockett.

Joan married the late John Francis Rockett in 1949 and moved to Foxborough where they raised their six children. In 1964, Joan graduated as a Licensed Vocational Nurse, and was hired as one of the first female nurses at Bridgewater State Hospital for the criminally insane. In 1972, Joan graduated honors with a Bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University. She worked as a Probation Officer at Dedham Superior Court for over 35 years and was a licensed clinical social worker.

Joan had many interests and passions in life. In her profession, Joan was dedicated to advocating for and supporting her probationers. She worked closely with her probation colleagues and was proud of their teamwork. Being with her family in Nantucket was her joy. Joan loved to bake, cook, entertain, and read several books a week.

Joan was the matriarch of her extended family, loving, generous, thoughtful and a great mentor. She overcame many challenges with grace and courage and was a woman ahead of the curve. Joan loved her community and was known for her smiles and waves to friends and strangers alike while on her daily walks in the neighborhood. Her legacy, spirit and memories will remain in our hearts forever.
