Glenn Jay Stacy Mt. Pleasant, Michigan Obituary

Glenn Jay Stacy

Glenn Jay Stacy, died Monday, May 22, 2017 in his sleep at Applewood Assisted Living. He was 102 years old. He was born on March 15, 1915 to Allen Maynard Stacy and Nettie Adona Niswonger Stacy. He enjoyed playing basketball and he was a high jumper. Glenn graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1933. After high school, he completed a correspondence business course and was hired by Borden’s Condensary in 1935, making $.39 per hour. When World War II started he enlisted in the Army Air Corp in January 1942 and served with the 306th Service Group, which supported the 98th Bomb Group in Northern Africa, Sicily and Italy, for a total of thirty-eight months service, obtaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. One of his favorite photographs of this period was of two buddies and himself on camelback in front of the pyramids in Egypt while they were waiting for supplies to move the army to the north. His discharge date was August 19, 1945. Glenn was a proud veteran who loved this country. His recollection of dates, names and facts relating to his service remained amazingly clear until recently. When the war ended, he went back to work with Borden’s. In 1946, he hired Donna Lee Chivington, his future wife, to work as a clerk in the office. They both left Borden’s for a short period, both being employed by Isabella Bank. Borden’s rehired them both, making Glenn the office manager. On July 4, 1947, he married Donna at the Methodist parsonage in Mt. Pleasant. He continued to work for Borden’s until 1960, when the Mt. Pleasant plant closed. Borden’s transferred his family to Randolph, New York and later to the Medina, New York area, where he was instrumental in converting both newly purchased machine shop locations to the Borden bookkeeping system. Numerous newspaper and magazine articles about the Borden plant have been written featuring interviews with Glenn. Glenn always missed home, so in 1963 he left Borden’s and came back to the Mt. Pleasant area to work as the warehouse manager at CMU, and later as a buyer for the purchasing department. He saw many of the buildings of the present day CMU campus being built and procured much of the materials used to furnish them. He retired in 1982 after nineteen years. Glenn is survived by his two sons: David Glenn (Andrea) Stacy of Mint Hill, North Carolina and Clifford Jay (Joyce) Stacy of Shepherd. He had five grandchildren: Christopher David (Melanie) Stacy, Heather Lynn (Jeff) Power, Benjamin Jay (Kathryn) Stacy, Joslyn Anne (Jason) Byrne and Megan Lee (Matthew) Warner. He had eleven great grandchildren: Elizabeth Marie Stacy Rose, Joshua Christopher Stacy, Faith Rianna Stacy, Alexander James Power, Zachary David Power, Ryan Jan Stacy, Lillyen Elizabeth Grace Stacy, Daniel Martin Warner, Julianne Marie Warner, Sean Garby Byrne, Marlena Joy Byrne and three step-great grandchildren: Jonathan Fender, Brandy Fender and Ryan Fender, and three great great grandchildren: Jade Rose, Angelina Rose and Lily Rose and many nieces and nephews. The family also sincerely appreciates Val Struble, who was his wonderful caretaker for the last few years when he lived at home. A special thanks to Applewood Assisted Living for the quality care and the love that they showed Dad for the last two years. Glenn was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Donna Lee Stacy, his parents and all his siblings: Edith (Forest) Howland, Helen (Alan) Hagerman, Hazel (Myron) Fox and Daniel (Betty) Stacy. Pleasant on Tuesday, May 30 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and again on Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until time of the service at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Isabella County Commission on Aging for all their help through the years.
