Grant "Woody" Miller, Jr. Obituary

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Grant “Woody” Miller, Jr., who left us on October 14, 2024, at the age of 71. He was a man whose life was filled with love, laughter, and adventure, and his absence is felt deeply by all who knew him. Known for his humor, warmth, and wit, Woody had a unique gift for bringing joy to those around him.  Woody was a source of laughter, and a reminder of how deeply a life can touch the hearts of others. He left us far too soon, and is missed beyond words.

Woody’s love for his family, especially his granddaughters Olivia and Amelia, was at the center of his life. Nothing brought him more joy than spoiling them with candy, watching their dance routines, and spending holidays together. Every gathering became a cherished memory, filled with laughter, treats, and his unwavering support for Olivia and Amelia’s every accomplishment. He was their biggest fan.

Woody shared his adventurous spirit with his son, Jimmy, as they traveled across the U.S., exploring 48 states together (Woody ultimately reaching 49). Together, they shared countless adventures, from camp food delicacies, to road side attractions, to the majestic parks of the American west. These father-son road trips were filled with unforgettable moments that will remain etched in Jimmy’s heart as lasting memories of Woody’s love for the open road and his joyful camaraderie.

Known for his sharp wit and a humor that could brighten any room, Woody was always ready with a quick joke or a funny observation that brought instant smiles to friends and family. His laughter was infectious, and his ability to lighten the mood left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. With a natural talent for connecting with people, Woody found humor in just the right moments, turning them into cherished memories. He built an extraordinary network of friends, both vast and close-knit, whom he treated with genuine care and affection. Woody’s unwavering commitment to these friendships allowed him to stay connected with countless people he considered his second family.

Woody was also a huge fan of Maryland sports. He celebrated every Baltimore Ravens touchdown and reveled in the camaraderie of watching games with friends. A lifelong fan of Baltimore Orioles and Maryland Terrapins basketball, Woody’s passion for sports reflected his loyalty and zest for life. NASCAR and golf were among his other great loves, and he shared many joyful days on the golf course and at the racetrack with friends and family, finding companionship and laughter in each shared moment.

Dedicating 24 years of his professional life to Bell Atlantic, Woody excelled as IT Manager in Directory Services. Known for his team building and leadership, he built a reputation as a team player who could always be counted on. Woody was especially known for his camaraderie and supportive nature, which earned him the respect and friendship of his colleagues, whom he continued to keep in touch with through his life. He fostered an inclusive and collaborative environment, and often shared stories, laughs, and genuine connections with his team. His legacy at Bell Atlantic is one of respect, teamwork, and unwavering dedication.

Woody is survived by his loving wife, Marie K. Miller; his beloved children, James Miller and Wendy Martin, her husband Andrew Martin; cherished grandchildren Olivia Martin and Amelia Martin; loving siblings Gregory Miller (wife Renee), Dennis Miller (wife Kathy), Kevin Miller (wife Mary), and Mary Margaret Schriefer (husband Jeffrey). He leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward. He is preceded in death by his beloved sister, Elizabeth “Betty” A. Ehrhart, and his parents, Grant W. Miller, Sr., and Genevieve Miller (nee Scriba).

A Memorial service celebrating Woody’s life will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at BAILEY Funeral Home and Cremation Service, PA, followed by a gathering at Matthews 1600, 1600 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD 21228.
