Dewayne McHenry, known as “Terry” by family and friends, was born on August 10, 1967 in Crockett, Texas to the parentage of Jazzie Lee Hamilton and Erma McHenry.
He attended Lovelady Elementary, Crockett Middle School and Crockett High School. While a high school student, he was a state championship track & field sprinter and football player.
Dewayne accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church by Pastor Harris. He was a current member of New Pleasant Hill Baptist church where he served on the usher board.
Terry was a lover of music and movies. He enjoyed playing his guitar in his personal music room at home, fishing, drawing, carpentry, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He was a former assistant coach of the Houston County Crusaders Youth Football Team.
Terry owned and operated his own lawn care service, alongside his wife, for over 37 years. Over the years, he also worked in maintenance for several companies, as a grocery store attendant at Mini Max, and as a corrections officer at the Eastham Unit.
On November 3, 2024, Dewayne McHenry entered into eternal rest. He was preceded in death by his son (LaMark McHenry), parents, grandson (Derrick Batts, Jr.), 5 sisters (Hazel White, Annie T. Johnson, Ada Simon, Veola Hackett, L.V. Philips), brother (Willie Haynes), aunt (Charlene Arthur), 2 nephews (Johnny Bailey and Brian White), and beloved aunt (Ella Mae Strong).
Left to honor his life and cherish his memory are his wife, Paula McHenry; children: Derrick Batts, Sr., Vincent Batts, Sr. (Tracey), Terriance Batts (Jasmine), Terri Anthony (Brocterria) Consuela McHenry; 17 grandchildren; 3 sisters: Emma Mae Jones, Rutha Johnson, Joyce McHenry; mother-in-law, Towanda Long Webber; sisters-in-law: Mae Bell Lee, Ruby Lee Batts, Betty Batts, Helen Daniels, Dorothy Lee Johnson (DeWayne), Nettie Harris, Lenora Adams, Sheena Morning; brothers-in-law: Glen Dall Batts, Joel Batts (Patricia); uncle, Charlie McHenry, Jr.; goddaughters: Cindy Shamblin, Rebecca Rojas, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
