Lila Mae Menke, 91, of Dubuque, died on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the Stonehill Care Center in Dubuque.


Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Cremation Service.


The Funeral Service for Lila will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, November 7, 2024, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephanie Schlimm officiating. Burial will be at Linwood Cemetery in Dubuque.


Lila was born September 7, 1933, in Wapello, IA, the daughter of William and Dorothy (Boyd) Brauns. On November 23, 1961, she married Thomas Paul Menke in Wapello, IA. He preceded her in death on September 20, 1992. Lila graduated from Wapello High School in 1950. During her working career she worked in the library at Kennedy School, as well as, Washington Middle School in Dubuque where she also would assist with recess duty.


Lila was giving of her time where she volunteered at Finley Hospital, was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Organization, where she was a past president, and she belonged to Dubuque Area Retired School Personnel Association. Lila was a passionate Iowa Hawkeye fan. She also enjoyed staying active by going to her coffee club, playing bingo, working on puzzles, gardening, working on the family genealogy, and quilting where she would quilt with the Busy Bee's Quilting Club. She also enjoyed bowling; when she could no longer go out bowling she began playing Wii bowling, nobody at Eagle Pointe Place would want to take her on in bowling, she was very competitive. She enjoyed going to her kids sporting events and following the events that her grandchildren were involved with. Lila and Tom enjoyed traveling together, even after his passing she continued to travel to visit family in various locations. Most of all, Lila's greatest joy and prime focus in life was her family.


Survivors include her three children, Lisa (Rob) Hood of Bennington, NE; John Edwards of Princeton, IA; and Steven Edwards of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Thomas Hood and Brianne Hood, Stephanie (Andy) Huber, Matt Edwards, and Christina (Nathan) Utt; four great-grandchildren, Henry, Emma, and Harper Utt, and Bella Edwards; two sisters, Norma "Teddy" Reeman of Pierce, CO; and Beverly "Terri" Lincoln of Durant, IA; one brother, William Brauns of Keosauqua, IA; and several nieces and nephews.


Besides her parents and  husband, Lila was preceded in death by her sister, Donna (Wendell) Wilson; and three brothers-in-law, Jack Reeman, Wayne Lincoln, and Dean Stade.


The family would like to extend a special Thank You to Hospice of Dubuque, the staff at Stonehill, and the staff and residents at Eagle Pointe Place for their care and friendship over the years.


In lieu of plants and flowers, a memorial has been established.
