Walter S. Diefenderfer, Jr., age 76, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband to Debra A. (Sabella) Diefenderfer, with whom he shared over 53 years of loving marriage. Born in Bethlehem on November 12, 1947, to the late Walter S. Diefenderfer, Sr. and Betty (Kresh) Diefenderfer, Walter, affectionately known as "Walt," lived a life marked by service and love.
A graduate of Liberty High School, Walt served in the United States Army. However, his most distinguished role was with the Bethlehem Police Department, where he dedicated 36 years of his life. Walt retired in 2004 as Deputy Commissioner, a role in which he exemplified integrity, leadership, and a deep commitment to the safety of his hometown. A strong supporter of the men and women in uniform, Walt remained committed to his brothers and sisters in law enforcement until his passing.
Walt was a proud member of local organizations, including the Jefferson Democratic Club, Bethlehem Volunteer Fireman's Home Association, Heights Athletic Association, North End Wanderers, and the Westside Republican Club. He found joy in relaxing on the patio with Debbie and their beloved boxers, listening to music. Walt lived a great life playing baseball, bowling, golf and fishing at the lake with his cousins.
Walt’s only regret was not being around to cast his vote on Tuesday. He was so eager that we’re pretty sure he’s up there lobbying for a write-in!
Survivors: In addition to his loving wife Debbie, he will be remembered by his daughters, Traci Kearney (husband Aidan) and Kristy Tramonte (husband Antonio), all of Bethlehem and his grandson Preston who was his buddy and the apple of his grandfather’s eye. Walt is also survived by his sister in law Brenda Hunter (husband Tom), brother in law William Sabella, nephew Anthony Sabella, niece Rachel McNeil (Otis), great nephew Joell McNeil, great niece Mariyah McNeil, and many cousins whom he thought of as siblings. Walt was preceded in death by his beloved nephew David Link, whom he thought of often.
