Hazel June Gehman Berkey, age 93, Windber, Pennsylvania; born June 22, 1931, in Freeport, Illinois, and departed this life on October 30, 2024; Daughter of the late Rev. Clayton and Mary Gibble Gehman. Preceded in death by her husband, Irvin, on May 3, 2021, to whom she had been married 71-1/2 years. Survived by Sons: Randall and friend, Joanne Rodd, Seattle, WA, Timothy, Pittsburgh, PA, and Jeffrey and wife, Sherry, Indian Lake, PA; Grandchildren: Mary Clare of OH, Timothy Berkey and husband, Chris Riffle and Julia Berkey and friend Katie all of NY, Andrew and Rachel Berkey, Pittsburgh, PA, Sara Berkey and friend, Ben Wright, of Bethesda, MD, Jeffrey and wife, Melissa Berkey, Allison Park, PA, and Emma and husband Doug Gebhart, Mammoth Lakes, CA; Great grandchildren: Sebastian, Theo and Cole Shulyack, Kacey, Hayden, Lainey, and Sadie Berkey and Hazel, Evie, Emery, Steele, Cleo and June Gebhart. Also survived by sister, Elaine Rhodes, Timonium, MD, and numerous nieces and nephews; predeceased by sisters, Louise Ollweiler, Woodstown, NJ, and Helen Hegedus, Windber, PA. Hazel graduated from Windber High School in 1949 and married Irvin on November 25th of that year. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren and attended Berkey Church of the Brethren for over 60 years, serving in many capacities as Sunday School Teacher, Youth Advisor, Deaconess, President of Women’s Fellowship, and Choir Member. She was also a member of the former Church of the Brethren Home Auxiliary and served as the President for 13 years and volunteered for over 30 years in the Beauty Shop. Hazel worked for 13 years in the Medical Records Department of Windber Hospital and was office manager for the Medical Group of Windber from 1974-1982. She worked with her husband, Irvin, in their Berkey Builders contracting business for more than 55 years. Hazel loved being with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and always encouraged and supported them. She was immensely proud of her children and grandchildren’s careers and personal achievements. At Hazel’s request, a private Family Memorial Service will be held at the convenience of the family.
