Irving "Irv" Cohen of White Plains, NY, formerly of Harlem, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 30, at home with his beloved wife of 69 years, Marsha, by his side. Irv is also survived by his son Bruce, daughter-in-law Stacey, and cherished grandchildren Amanda and Kelsey.
Born in Harlem to Dora Katzman and Philip Cohen, Irv grew up as the older brother to Louis, learning the importance of family during the Great Depression. Supporting his family from a young age, he earned his pharmacy degree from Columbia University, marking the start of a lifelong career in healthcare where he would help countless others throughout his life.
After working as a pharmaceutical representative, Irv realized his dream of opening his own pharmacy, which he proudly operated for 31 years in Parkchester in the Bronx. Beloved in his community, he was known for his generosity, often providing medication for free to those in need. Even in his later years, Irv continued to work, putting in 30 hours a week at CVS well into his 80s, embodying a work ethic admired by all.
A devoted husband who affectionately called his wife Marsha "Pud," he was a loving father to his only child, who carries forward his legacy of kindness and strength. His passion for classical music was a lifelong joy; his treasured collection of over 1,000 records is a testament to his appreciation for the arts. His lifelong passion for learning was evident in his engagement with historical, philosophical, and religious books. An avid golfer and politically active, he kept his family updated through lively discussions.
Irv was known for his warmth, integrity, and unwavering kindness, with never an unkind word spoken about anyone. To honor his memory, we welcome donations to Hospice of Westchester, whose care brought such comfort in his final days.
