Edward Joseph Martel III Obituary

Edward Joseph Martel III, age 49 of Harrison Township, passed away September 29, 2018. Ed was diagnosed with cancer in 2000 but he never let it slow him down. He continued to pursue his dreams regardless of the challenges he might have been facing. His passion and enthusiasm were an inspiration to everyone he met. Ed graduated from De La Salle High School and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame for playing varsity baseball, basketball and football. In 1987, Ed was drafted to play for the New York Yankees right out of high school. After 8 years with them, he finished his career with the Detroit Tigers. While playing baseball, he attended Northwestern University and earned a degree in Economics. After having his baseball career cut short from injury, Ed decided to pursue a career in physical therapy. He attended Oakland University, where he met his wife, received his Masters of Physical Therapy and went on to achieve a certificate for Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy. He and his wife, Julie, are partners and physical therapists in HealthQuest Physical Therapy. While with HealthQuest, he founded the Overhead Athletic Institute (OAI) (www.overheadathletics.com), with the goal of educating athletes on how to avoid the same injuries he sustained while playing baseball. Ed was passionate about everything he did including perfecting his golf game, but his true passion was spending time with his wife and their three children, who were his greatest joy and achievement. Loving husband of Julie; beloved father of Elyse, Edward, and Luke; cherished son of Edward and Dorothy; dear son-in-law of Randall and Judy Brewer; beloved brother of Anne (Chema Martinez) Martel, Elizabeth Martel, Michael (Beth) Martel, and Michael (Michelle) Brewer; dear uncle of Helena Martinez Martel, Emma Martinez Martel, Kyla Brewer, and Bryce Brewer. He will be greatly missed. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Ed's name.
