John A. Somma, Aug. 13, 1935 - Oct. 23, 2024
Born on August 13, 1935 in Jamaica-Queens, NY to the late Enrico and Grace (Rogers) Somma.
John joined the United States Navy as a Seabee in 1955 and spent three years on a top-secret naval base in Clarksville, TN. On the fourth year of service, he as assigned to the ship the USS Tanner and spent time in the Mediterranean and Turkey.
He married Patricia Clarke on February 4, 1961 at the Queen of Peace Church in Flushing, NY. In 1965, they moved to Red Hook, NY and raised their two children Lisa Marie and John Michael. During his years in Red Hook, John worked for Sylvan Lake Telephone Company and spent 20 years on the Board of Directors of Wilderstein in Rhinebeck, NY. John enjoyed ice boating on the Hudson River, woodcarving, cane making, reminiscing with his cousin Robert Rogers and spending time with his two grandsons John Angelo and Jacob Martin. Whom he so proud of and loved telling them about all his adventures. He enjoyed many meals that his daughter-in-law Angela made for him and the family. He was truly loved by his friends and family.
In addition to his loving wife of 63 years, John is survived by his children, Lisa Somma of Saugerties, NY and John (Angela) Somma of Livingston, NY; his loving grandchildren, John Angelo and Jacob Martin; his brother, Eugene (Diane) Somma of Magnolia, DE; along with extended family and friends.
Friends and family will be received at the Burnett & White Funeral Homes, Red Hook on Tuesday, October 29th, 2024 from 4 to 7PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Christopher's Church in Red Hook on Wednesday, October 30th, 2024 at 11AM. Burial with military honors to follow at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Red Hook, NY.
Memorials may be made to in John's memory to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
