John "Jay" "Stick" Burnam Lainhart, 74, passed away October 19, 2024, surrounded by family at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Jay was born June 4, 1950, to John Burnam and Katie (Spivey) Lainhart in McKee, Kentucky. Jay grew up in Washington County where he had several friends. In 1969 Jay joined the Army. With the 1st Calvary 101st Airborne he went to Vietnam, where he was injured in 1970 earning a Purple Heart. In 1972 he married the love of his life, Brenda (Baker) Lainhart and they had two daughters. Jay was a truck driver. From a long-haul trucker with companies' life David Hood, Zipp Trucking, etc., owner-operator of Lainhart Trucking. Short haul for Pepsi to driving dump trucks for Charlie Howser, "Stovepipe" Johnnies Trucking, and Jeff Coomes. Jay enjoyed many things in his life. In his younger years, drag racing on 39, out pulling other trucks with the General Lee, watching Westerns, love of horses, telling jokes, and he was a damn good dirt track race car driver. He was also a founding member of the Scott County VFW Post #6582. Jay loved his family, God, friends, his country, and his dog. He was a proud Veteran and hero to most. He was the best husband, daddy, pap pap, brother, uncle and friend anyone could ever hope for. Preceded in death by his parents, Burnam and Katie; brothers, Cash Lainhart and Jerry Lainhart; sisters, Ica Wilkerson and Evelyn Law; sister-in-law, Sherry Lainhart; brothers in law, David Baker and Ronnie Baker; father-in-law, Farris Baker; mother-in-law, Wanda Baker; niece, Devonnia Tscheulin; and his most precious grandbaby, Mallory Lainhart. Jay is survived by his wife, Brenda Lainhart; daughters, Lisa Smith and Vicki Lainhart; grandbabies, Alesha (Gabe) Smith, Jaylee (Grayson) Smith, Jaysen Lainhart, Madysen Lainhart; great grandbabies, Laim and Kayde Leezer and Melody Smith; brothers, Charles (Betty) Lainhart, Jack (Marty) Lainhart, and Ben Lainhart; sister, Shirley (Joe) Sears; brother in law, Charlie (Lisa) Baker; sisters in law, Linda (Ray) Dawson, Eve Lainhart, Taleen Baker, Linda Baker; several nieces and nephews; and his dog Charlie. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 2:00pm at Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg, Indiana. Visitation will be on Thursday, prior to the service starting at 11:00am until the time of service at 2:00pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Austin, Indiana.
