Clarence Thomas Szczech Jr. Obituary

Clarence “Bud” Thomas Szczech, Jr., age 78, of Katy, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in Newburgh Heights, surrounded by extended family and friends who helped shape his life, before moving to San Antonio and spending nearly 40 years there making strong connections.

Bud was married to his high school sweetheart, Martha Elaine Walczak, on June 15, 1968, at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Garfield Heights, Ohio. Their enduring love of the Lord and each other was evident as they celebrated 56 years of marriage this past summer. Bud served honorably in the Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968, a time that instilled in him a profound sense of duty and patriotism.

A proud graduate of St. Stanislaus High School (1964) and Cuyahoga Community College, Bud’s life was characterized by his faith and love of his family. He was devoted to Martha and took great joy in cheering on his children and grandchildren in their pursuits. Bud was known for his storytelling, hearty laughter, and ability to make everyone feel welcome.

Bud had a passion for sports, fiercely supporting his Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Guardians, and the San Antonio Spurs. He enjoyed fishing, playing poker, and indulging in his favorite Mexican food, especially with a mango margarita in hand.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Martha; his children, Amy (Tom), Jill (Brett), and John (Julianne), along with his cherished grandchildren: Connor, Caleb, Maddison, Morgan, Grace, and Lucas. Bud is also survived by his sister, Rosanne, brother, Brian, and numerous other family members and loved ones.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Szczech, Sr. and Evelyn Blaha, and his brother, Robert (Bob).

In lieu of flowers, the Szczech family kindly asks for donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, an organization near and dear to the family.

A viewing will be held on Monday, October 28, from 5 to 7 PM at Schmidt Funeral Home in Katy, Texas, with a rosary to follow. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 29, at 11 AM at Epiphany of the Lord Catholic Church, followed by a luncheon reception.

Bud’s spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
