West Haven―John Michael Brough, of West Haven, passed away Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on March 8, 1954, in Rutland, the son of John and Eileen (Thayer) Brough. John grew up in Castleton and graduated from Fair Haven Union High School in 1972. He graduated with a business degree in 1976 from Saint Leo College in Florida, where he continued to play the game he loved, baseball.

He married Lisa A. Stannard on October 17, 1981, in Fair Haven.

John worked as a loan officer with First Vermont Bank in Chester for many years, then as Sales Manager of Fernwood Homes in Whitehall, NY. He was an active member of the Castleton Lion’s Club for 35 years, serving terms as president and treasurer. He was most notable for his role as the chairman of the Annual Ice Fishing Derby and Summer Auction. He received a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2006, and a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship Award in 2023 for his continued service with the Lion’s Club.

During his retirement, John enjoyed operating Dugout Dogs in Hydeville, where he enjoyed the company of many friends, both old and new. He loved being outdoors, cooking over a wood fire, camping, and ice fishing with family and friends. John was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and rarely missed watching or listening to a game.

He loved boating with his family on Lake Bomoseen, vacationing in Maine, and hunting with his son, Gavin. He cherished every moment being Grampie to his two granddaughters.

He leaves behind his wife, Lisa Brough, of West Haven; his daughter, Ashley (Adam) Brua, of Fair Haven; his son, Gavin, of West Haven; two granddaughters, Adleigh and Emilie Brua; two siblings, Madeline (Bruce) Young, of Swanton, and Thomas Brough, of Cove, AR; and many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, John and Eileen Brough, sister Suzanne Brough, and extended family, Peggy Gage, and Hubie Pratt.

In the lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Castleton Lion’s Club, P.O. Box 391, Castleton, VT 05735.
