Maria Abel-Crecelius Obituary

Maria Yvonne Abel-Crecelius, age 74, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024, after a brief illness.  Born on June 7, 1950 in Louisville, Kentucky to the late Elisha William Abel and Roma (Jennings) Abel.

Maria lived a life of creativity, passion, and devotion to both her family and the world around her.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Jennifer Chanley (Tim) and Amy Willett (Cody), as well as her cherished grandchildren, Devin Crecelius and Emma Chanley.  Her legacy of love and resilience lives on through them.

On June 1, 1971, Maria married David Randall Crecelius, her life partner and soulmate, with whom she shared over five decades of joy, music, and adventure.  David preceded her in death on September 2023, but the life they built together remains a testament to their enduring bond.  They began their shared journey in Milltown, Indiana, where their passion for music and community flourished.

A devoted gardener and lover of nature, Maria found beauty in the world around her and in the hearts of those she encountered.

For over a decade, Maria hosted a weekly radio show that celebrated the diversity of music from across the globe.  She was also deeply involved in local theater, most notably in her role as La-Di-Da in Trash Theater, where she and her troupe educated schools about the importance of recycling and environmental stewardship.

After nearly 25 years of service with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Maria retired as a naturalist and nationally certified raptor handler.  She found immense fulfillment in her role, particularly in her care of C52, the resident bald eagle.  Educating the public about conservation and wildlife brought her great pride.

Together with David, Maria’s musical endeavors carried them across the country, from West Virginia to Minnesota, Louisiana, and beyond, forming lifelong friendships and creating treasured memories on the folk music circuit.  Each performance was a gift she treasured, and the connections she made enriched her life in countless ways.

Maria is survived by her sisters, Cindy Leftwich and Yvette Ferree, and her brother, Bill Abel.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Malcolm Abel, and her sister, Leilani Abel.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has been chosen, and a celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to WildCare, wildlife rehabilitation services Bloomington, Indiana.  wildcareinc.org
