Merrill L. Werner Obituary

Merrill L. Werner, 89 of Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2024 surrounded by family and loved ones. He was born in Dayton, Ohio to Fred and Lessie Werner. He was predeceased by his beautiful wife of 65 years, Jennie Werner, and brother, James Werner.

Left to cherish his memory is his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Kim Werner; brother, Bill (Judy) Werner; brother, Larry (Janet) Werner; and stepmom, June Werner, all of whom will miss him so deeply.

Never meeting a stranger, Merrill always endeavored to make conversation with anyone who would listen. He loved raising and caring for all types of birds and never missed a chance to talk about them. Dogs and cats were always in his life as he adored them all. He relished the opportunity to help his neighbors and to be active in the community.

Merrill was a member of the Masonic Lodge of 66 years and the Eastern Star of over 40 years where he was a Past Worthy Patron. He retired as Chief for the U.S. Navy and is also a retired Piermaster from Norfolk Southern Corporation. He was fond of talking sea stories as well as anything train related.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Suncrest Hospice with an honorable mention of his Hospice Aide Ashley B. We also want to sincerely thank The Commonwealth at the Ballentine for the all of their tireless efforts and dedication.

A funeral service will be held in his honor on October 22nd at 2:00 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, followed by a private interment ceremony. Condolences to the family may be left at www.hollomon-brown.com.
