Glynn Don was born on December 27, 1926 in Kress, Texas to Guy Tarver (Guy T) and Pearl (Strawn) Hughes. He graduated from Kress High School and married Layvon Shuping on November 5, 1944. Through the years they lived in Kress, Friona, Stratford, Happy and Canyon, Texas. They were married for 72 ½ years before she preceded him in death on March 28, 2017.
Glynn Don fondly remembers helping his dad in his early years plant the large elm trees all around the WTAMU campus and the strategically planted trees in Thompson Park in Amarillo. In addition to owning Glynn Hughes Nursery, Glynn was a farmer, a rancher, and he raised registered Black Angus cattle.
While in Stratford, Glynn Don was a member of the First Baptist Church and loved being a greeter there. Most currently, he was a member of Palo Duro Cowboy Church in Canyon.
Glynn Don immensely enjoyed visiting with people, and he could easily relate to all classes of people, from the common working class (like himself) to the highly educated (like his many WT professor friends); he made easy conversation and just enjoyed getting to know them.
Glynn Don took delight in his daily routine of frequenting his favorite places. He started out at the Co-op in the morning, moving to Happy State Bank to visit with his fellow WT Lady Buff Volleyball fans, then on to Braum’s for lunch, and back to McDonald’s at 4:00 for coffee. His routine was seldom altered.
Glynn Don dearly loved his family and was quick to greet any of them with a hearty, "Come on in this house!” He was loved by everyone and will be greatly missed. His family lovingly remembers his quote, “It’s been good knowing you,” when he left his company in the living room, and he went to bed!
The family would like to thank the staff at Conner Court for their wonderful, loving and compassionate care of Glynn Don.
Glynn Don was also preceded in death by a brother, Van Earl Hughes and two sisters, Guynell Hughes and Doris Dorrough.
Survivors include two sons, Fred Hughes and wife, Irene of Amarillo and Michael Hughes and wife, Janice of Amarillo; five grandchildren, Braun Hughes of Manor, Robyn Massey and husband, Cory of Dripping Springs, Joe Hughes and wife, Joanna of Canyon, Amy Redus and husband, Rev.
