Brian James Butcher, age 62, died peacefully on October 14, 2024, surrounded by his loving family, following a recent diagnosis of lung cancer. He was born on January 7, 1962, in Alma, Michigan, to Forrest and Sharon (Potter) Butcher. He graduated from St. Johns High School, Class of 1980, and lived in St. Johns until his recent move to Haslett.
For over 43 years, Brian worked with pride in the grounds department and landscaping at Michigan State University, where he built many close friendships. Outside of work, Brian was passionate about fitness, finding a second home at the YMCA in East Lansing, where he earned the affectionate nickname “The Mayor.” His presence was a constant at the gym, where he developed enduring friendships with many. He loved going out to eat, watching movies, and riding his Harley, finding joy in life’s simple pleasures. Brian was also an avid music lover and spent countless hours with his guitars, teaching himself to play and cherishing the peace and joy that music brought him and others.
Though he was a quiet man, Brian had a heart that was larger than life. Brian made a lasting impact on those around him, often becoming a father figure and mentor to many. Family was his foundation and his most cherished treasure. He was blessed with his beloved daughter, Nicole, and he treasured every moment spent with his family, who were always at the center of his world.
He is survived by his daughter, Nicole (Dustin Benner) Butcher; his grandchildren, Lexus (Jordon Geller) Lange and Dominic Harper; his brother, Kim Butcher; sisters, Leighann (Daniel) Thompson, Bobbi (Chris) Youngs and Kelly (Martin) Smith; his honorary daughter, Jessica Buzalski; lifelong best friend, Ralph Whetstine; and many friends from the gym, colleagues, as well as nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and his niece, Jamie Ladisky.
