Doreen L. (Jones) Joekel, 66, of Beatrice passed away Saturday morning, October 12, 2024, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln after a courageous battle with cancer since 2007. She was born on May 23, 1958 at Port Huron, Michigan. She graduated from Amphitheater High School in Tucson, Arizona and attended Omaha School of Business in Omaha. She married Reverend Kenneth Joekel on May 12, 1978 at Omaha. They were blessed with two children, Kady and Kyle. She was a member of Christ Community Church of Beatrice and sang in the church choir for many years.
Doreen worked several office positions throughout her life, as well as at the Beatrice State Developmental Center, where she retired from. Doreen was a kind-hearted soul who dedicated her life to serving others. Her generous spirit was evident through her many years of volunteer work with various community groups. After retiring, Doreen continued to spread joy by regularly meeting with former co-workers for meals and heartfelt conversations.
Doreen's caring nature knew no bounds. She was always there for her friends, offering rides to appointments, assisting with errands, and providing a helping hand whenever needed. Her selflessness and compassion touched countless lives, leaving behind a lasting legacy of kindness that will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
She had a passion for collecting antiques, especially dishes and Precious Moments figurines. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, and loved to travel, whether it was exploring new destinations abroad or enjoying the beauty of her home state. A devoted Husker volleyball fan, Doreen rarely missed watching a game. Above all, she cherished spending time with her friends and family, and her beloved rescue dog, Dolce. She and her granddaughter, Reese, shared a special bond, embarking on at least one trip a year and enjoying arts and crafts, such as painting and sewing together. They also delighted in shopping for the latest fashions.
Survivors include her husband Kenneth Joekel of Beatrice; daughter, Kady (David) Matthies of Lincoln; son, Kyle Joekel of Louisiana; granddaughter, Reese Agena of Lincoln; father, Lynn Jones of Beatrice; brother, Robert Jones of Tucson, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her mother, Marion Jones.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at Christ Community Church of Beatrice with Pastor Dan Martin officiating. The service will be live streamed by the church. Private inurnment of the cremains will be held at a later date in the Granite Hill (Hopewell) Cemetery. Cremation has taken place and there will be no viewing. A book for signatures will be available on Friday, October 25, 2024, from noon until 8:00 P.M. at the Fox Funeral Home. The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M at the funeral home.
