Stephen "Steve" L. Massey, Sr, a devoted father, grandfather, and dedicated servant of GOD, went home to be with our LORD on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at the age of 74. he was born on September 10, 1950, in Anderson, South Carolina. A graduate of Stephen’s Lee High School, he served in the U.S. Army, embodying honor and dedication to his country. He proudly served in the U.S. Army earning numerous honors, including, the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/1 Bronze Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, two Overseas Service Bars, Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star, and Good Conduct Medal, recognizing his dedication and service to his country. A man of unwavering devotion, Steve was a loving father and grandfather who adored his family. As a man of faith, Steve found his greatest joy in testifying his love for GOD and how blessed he was. He was a pillar of strength and wisdom to his children, grandchildren, and all who knew him. His devotion to his family was evident from the unwavering support to the tender moments he spent with his grandchildren, providing love during times of joy and hardship. He was preceded in death by his first wife Destrola E. Massey, his parents Thomas and Sylvia Massey, and his brother, Thomas Massey, Jr. Left to cherish his memory are his children Stephen "Monty" L. Massey, Jr. (Renee), John "Tony" A. Massey, and Lakeisha Massey Lee, his grandchildren Karmen Massey, Ashanty Lee, Kyleah Lee, and Amaya Massey, brother Andre Massey (Kim), and his wife Gail Massey, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. His legacy of love, faith, and kindness will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. A man of quiet strength and strong faith, Steve now rests in the presence of the Lord, reunited with those who went before him. His family takes comfort in the knowledge that he is at peace and watching over them with love from above.

 

A Funeral Service to honor the life of Stephen will be held on Friday, October 18, 2024, at New Mount Olive Baptist Church (2 Herman St.), at 12pm. He will lie in state one hour prior to the funeral. Burial will be held at the Western Carolina State Veteran Cemetery (Black Mountain) on Friday at 2pm. Viewing will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Avery's Memorial Chapel from 12pm - 7pm. The service will be live streamed on Avery's Memorial Chapel's Facebook page.
