Having led an accomplished, joyful and impactful life, June Dwyer Castano, 84, of West Caldwell passed away peacefully on February 6, 2018.Born in Morristown in 1933, she lived almost all of her days in the Caldwells, save for two years in Harrison. She was the second of Michael Dwyer and Vera McGrath Dwyers four children, which included her beloved brother and sisters, Michael Dwyer, Jr., Carol Collins and Virginia Fox, who predeceased her.Attending grammar school, high school and college on a campus she loved so dearly, June graduated from Mount Saint Dominic Academy and Caldwell College. In high school, she was president of her class and a four-year starter on the basketball team, which won four state championships while posting an 80-game winning streak. When The Star-Ledger selected its girls basketball Team of the Century for 1900-1999, June received recognition for her success in the 1950s. At Caldwell College, she served as president of the student council, while participating in a host of extracurricular activities. She again excelled as an athlete, both on the schools basketball and softball teams.June went on to earn a masters degree in English from Seton Hall University and a masters degree in theatre from Villanova University, which she attended as a Shubert Playwriting Fellow.A supremely gifted human being, the world benefitted from her talents through a diverse career as a writer, educator and community leader. She worked as an editor of The Catholic Advocate, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Newark. She taught drama at Mount Saint Dominic Academy, Lacordaire Academy and Benedictine Academy. June founded The Collegians, a musical comedy company that toured the state to raise funds for scholarships. She authored plays and acted in more than 100 theatrical productions. She also sat on the Board of Directors of First State Financial Services and First Dewitt Savings Bank. Guided by a profound faith, she dedicated herself to her church communities, including service on the parish council of Notre Dame Church and as secretary of the West Essex Ministerial Association. In 2001, she entered the Order of Malta, a Catholic organization that provides services to the disenfranchised. June maintained a lifetime devotion to Mount Saint Dominic Academy and Caldwell College, as well as to the Sisters of Saint Dominic. At Mount Saint Dominic, she chaired the schools yearlong centennial celebration in 1992. At Caldwell College, she served three terms on the Alumni Board and, in 1986, founded the prestigious Veritas Award, given each year to exemplary graduates. June received the Veritas Award in 1993 for excellence in leadership. Her alma maters recognized her with additional honors, including induction in the Mount Saint Dominic Academy Hall of Fame, the Caldwell College Alumna of the Year Award and the Caldwell College Presidents Award.Above all, June adored her family and friends. She married the Honorable Gregory J. Castano in 1966. Their 51 years of marriage produced four sons: Gregory and his wife, Antonietta; Christopher and his wife, Elizabeth; John and his wife, Kristi; and Timothy. She loved deeply her seven grandchildren: Bridget, Michaela, Kara, Katherine, Madeline, Finley and Eleanor.
