Lloyd Gayle Stearns, age 90, of Greenville, passed away at his home on Sunday, October 6, 2024. He was born in Sheridan on July 23, 1934, the son of Frank and Emma (Greenhoe) Stearns. For over 25 years, Gayle served with the State Police as a detective for all of West Michigan. After retiring as Detective Sergeant from the police force he spent most of his spare time helping his son Gary build horse drawn carriages. Gayle was a talented work worker and mechanic. He was also an avid outdoorsman and loved to go boating, hunting, and fishing. Annually, Gayle and his son Jim would go to the Bahamas to boat and fish together, Gayle always cherished their time together. It was important to him to stay in touch with family, even if there was some distance between them. He would call just to check in on you if he hadn’t heard your voice in a while. Gayle was a humble, selfless man and was willing to give anyone a helping hand. Gayle was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and special companion to his pup, Mindy. He is survived by his son, James Stearns; six grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 6 great- great grandchildren; brother, Barry (Nancy) Stearns; sister- in-law, Marie Wagner; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 78 years, Maxine Stearns; sons, Wayne Stearns, Gary Stearns; daughter, Kathryn Stearns; brothers, Wilber (Lois) Stearns, Donald (Phyllis) Stearns, Arnold (Betty) Stearns; brothers-in-law, Lawrence Helms, and Robert (Roberta) Helms; sisters- in- law, Joyce Helms, Ruby (Wilmer) Morris. Funeral services for Gayle will take place at Hurst Funeral Home on Friday, October 11, 2024 at 11:00 am with an hour of visitation prior. Gilbert Morris and Rev. Nan Dehnke will co-officiate. Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Hurst Funeral Home. A luncheon will be held at the Ray I. Booth American Legion Post 101 immediately after the funeral service. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Corewell Health Hospice.
