Joan K. Smith, of Hershey, passed away with her family by her side, on September 29, 2024.
She was born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania on January 13, 1937 and was the daughter of the late John D. and Elizabeth R. (Thompson) Kerkeslager.
Joan was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and best of all great grandmother or ggma as they called her. She enjoyed cooking, trying new recipes, and using all the fruits and vegetables from the garden and yard. Her favorites being the Howard German tomatoes and corn that Neil would plant. She was the mother everyone wanted as their own and gave her heart to the family as well as dear friends.
She enjoyed traveling with her daughter and son-in-law and big family dinners at her son and daughter-in-law’s home surrounded by family. She was the best partner Neil could have and they both looked out for each other. He was her hands and legs at times and she was his banker and health care manager and card game partner, among many other things helping the other.
Joan was a devoted member of the Palmyra Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and was beloved by a great number of friends there and will be greatly missed by them.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years Neil K. Smith; daughter Sherrilynn (Smith) Yuhas and husband Michael; son Timothy Smith, and wife Pamela ; two grandchildren, Heather (husband Jared) Zimmerman and Emily (husband Brad) Barnes; and three great grandchildren - Berkeley Barnes, Colton and Henley Zimmerman. She is also survived by three brothers, James (wife Nancy) Kerkeslager; Thomas (wife Millie) Kerkeslager and Dennis (wife Maxine) Kerkeslager as well as many nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her brothers John “Jack” Kerkeslager, Richard Kerkeslager and sisters May Beamesderfer, Marian Potteiger and Isabelle Ebur.
Visitation and memorial service will be held on Monday, October 14, 2024, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Palmyra, Pennsylvania. Visitation with the family will begin at 2:00 p.m. with service to begin at 3:00 p.m. Those unable to attend in person can attend via Zoom with Meeting Code 95041446029, passcode 391929,
