Dominican Sister of Peace, Sister Mary Faith (Sr. Jerome Marie) Dargan died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH on September 29, 2024. She was born in 1931 in West Haven, CT. In 1960 entered the congregation of St. Mary of the Springs, now the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

Sr. Mary Faith earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Albertus Magnus College, a Master of Arts Degree in Latin from Boston College and a PhD in Classics from The Ohio State University. She taught school in New Haven, Connecticut at St. Mary’s High School and in Columbus at Holy Spirit. On the college level, Sr. Mary Faith taught at the College of St. Mary of the Springs, now Ohio Dominican University, and The Ohio State University. For forty-four years she was a Professor of Classics at Albertus Magnus College, where she also served ten years as Academic Dean.  

Sr. Mary Faith enlightened and inspired thousands of students through her legendary lectures on the classics from Homer to Virgil and beyond. She opened students’ eyes to the worlds of ancient Greece and Rome by leading numerous study abroad summer tours. Sr. Mary Faith maintained an active scholarly and professional life including study at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece and at the American Academy in Rome. She served as President of the Connecticut Section of the Classical Association of New England. Her many awards and grants include several National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships, a Fullbright-Hays grant, and an Educator of the Year Award from the New Haven/Hamden Probus Club in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Marie Murphy Dargan and her brothers, Robert S. (Margaret) Dargan, Jr., Richard P. (Nancy) Dargan, and Rev. Peter S. Dargan.

She is survived by her sister, Virginia Dargan (Richard T.) Doyle, and many nieces and nephews. A Vigil of Remembrance Service will be held on October 8, 2024, at 4:45 p.m. at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel, Columbus, Ohio. 

The funeral liturgy will be held at the Dominican Sisters of Peace Motherhouse Chapel on October 9, 2024, at 9:30 am followed by burial at St. Joseph Cemetery by Egan-Ryan Funeral Home.
