Rowland Wilton George, Jr., 72, of New Kent, passed away early Sunday, September 29, 2024 after a battle with cancer.
Rowland was born on January 11, 1952 to Muriel & Rowland Sr. in Richmond, VA with a curious and adventurous spirit and witty personality. From an alligator pet to wagons outfitted with lawnmower engines, he kept everyone on their toes. After he graduated from John Marshall High School in 1970, he started his career with Verizon. He retired after 34 years of service but was not finished sharing his knowledge and skills. He partnered with several other industry veterans to found NDEC Corporation and stayed with the company for 11 years until a solid foundation was established. After multiple retirements, he was finally fully free to follow his true passion of golf.
His love for the game started in 1975 and would take him all over the world, including Scotland and Spain. For almost 50 years, he delighted in both the challenge it presented and the friendships it created. His competitive spirit led him to win club championships and earn 3 hole-in-ones. Despite all these accomplishments, Rowland most cherished his family, with his grandkids holding a special place in his heart.
While we lost our beloved Poppi, many others have lost a friend and loved one in him. There was so much more to him than just being a husband and dad, though to us, that was his greatest role. Rowland was also a son, brother, cousin, uncle, friend, colleague, coach and the list goes on and on.
Rowland was preceded in death by his father, Rowland Sr., and nephew, Chad Southward.
To cherish his memory, he leaves behind his devoted and loving wife, Mary, his children Shannon French (Mike) and Patrick George (Taylor), and their mother, his step-children Carly Daniel (Sterling) and Jason Boone (Missie), his mother, Muriel George, sisters Wanda Phillips (Jack), Pat Franklin (Joe) and Cindy Hutcherson (Harry), his grandchildren Kaila (Corey), Gabriel, Haden, Henry and Evie, and his great-grandchild Madelyn.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at Bliley’s on Augusta Ave. Visitation from 10:00-11:00 am with a service to follow from 11:00-12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to First Tee Greater Richmond or Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia (his nephew Chad had a wish granted in 1999 to attend the Masters).
