Rockne W Dyer Obituary

In Loving Memory of Rockne Wayne Dyer

October 3, 1948 – September 30, 2024

Rockne Wayne Dyer, affectionately known as Rocky or Rock, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of September 30, 2024, with his family by his side. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience.

Rockne is survived by his cherished wife of 53 years, Joyce (Winder) Dyer; his sons Steven (Krista Valinaggi), Paul (Melissa), and David Dyer; his brother Robert Dyer; his sister Debbie Stark; and his eight adoring grandchildren: Gavyn, Trinity, Samantha, Bailee, Aubrey, Jemma, Gianna Valinaggi Rinaldi, and Bryson Rinaldi. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Margaret Dyer, his in-laws Ray and Evelyn Winder, his brother Bill Dyer, and his daughter-in-law Allyn “Nikki” Dyer.

Born in Chadron, Nebraska, Rockne's family relocated to Fort Morgan, Colorado, where he would meet Joyce. Their childhood rivalry over newspaper subscriptions laid the foundation for a lifelong love story, one that flourished in their hometown.

Rockne proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1965 to 1969, stationed aboard the U.S.S. HOEL (DDG-13) where he completed four combat tours. He earned seven medals and four bronze stars for his service, embodying the valor and dedication he carried throughout his life. After his honorable discharge, he continued to serve in the Navy Reserves for three years.

In 1971, Rockne and Joyce began their journey together in Fort Morgan, moving to Hastings, Nebraska, and later to Rockford, Illinois, where their three sons were born. In 1984, they made Florida their forever home, creating a warm and loving household filled with laughter and joy.

Rockne was a hardworking man, but nothing brought him more happiness than his eight grandchildren. He took immense joy in making them smile, wiping away tears, and sharing in their laughter. His playful spirit and loving nature made him a remarkable grandfather and an unwavering source of support for his family.

In 2007, Rockne was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a challenge he faced with courage and humor. Despite the difficulties, he remained steadfast, bringing joy to those around him with his infectious smile and quick wit. After a brave 17-year battle, he took his final breath at James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital, leaving a profound impact on all who knew him.

In honor of Rockne’s wishes, his body has been donated to science for the study of MS, reflecting his hope to contribute to the understanding of this condition. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the organization dedicated to MS research.

Rockne Wayne Dyer will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his unwavering strength, boundless love, and the joy he brought to every life he touched.
