Kathleen Mary Elizabeth O’Donoghue, age 65, died peacefully after a short illness while surrounded by her family.

Kathleen was the loving daughter of the late Gerard O’Donoghue and Barbara Marino and grew up in Massachusetts. As a true life-long learner, Kathleen received her high school diploma from Crystal Lake High School (Class of 1976), a degree in education from Gordon College (Class of 1980), a Master of Divinity from North Park Theological Seminary (Class of 2005), and a M.S. in education from Capella University.

Kathleen met Michael Schupbach in the early 1980’s in Allston, and the two married in 1982. They raised their children, Joe and Hannah, on Cape Cod and across the North Shore of Boston. As a family unit, they always loved visiting Grandma Barbara in Manhattan, Grandma Elsie in Ohio, and took annual trips to Pilgrim Pines campground in New Hampshire. Kathleen was a ferociously supportive mother who cheered her children on to foster their theatrical and artistic talents as well as be change-makers and stay civically engaged. Over the years, Kathleen dedicated her maternal care to many young people, including being parent and guardian to Mikey, Anthony, Michael, Ashley, Dennis, Brian, Jerrica, Austin, Patrik, and Deandre.

Later in life, Kathleen met Charlene Poliquin whom she married in 2007. The two lived in Centerville for many years and loved spending time in Provincetown with family and friends. Kathleen had a large giving personality. She was a foster mother since 1989 and a chaplain for various hospice groups and also at Bridgewater State Hospital. She loved to travel and some of her favorite destinations were Ireland, Greece, and Hawaii. No matter who she was with, whether it was family or friends, she had some consistent loves throughout her life; cooking, reading, liturgy, concerts, restaurants, “her shows”, and of course Harrison Ford. She was a lifelong cat lover and nothing made her happier than listening to her favorite music like U2, Cat Stevens, Blondie, Sting, and many more artists.

Kathleen’s personality was filled with humor, storytelling, and most of all love. Kathleen’s sharp wit was only rivaled by her huge heart. Kathy’s passing is felt deeply by many people.

Kathleen was the loving mother of Joe Schupbach of Chicago, Hannah Schupbach of Chicago, and Deandre Barrosso of Somerville. Sister to Maureen A. Decker and her husband Kurt of NY and FL, and Gerard O’Donoghue III and his wife Angela of Cape Cod. Previous spouse but still great friends with Michael Schupbach of FL and Charlene Poliquin of Centerville. Last but not least, Kathy was a friend to countless people, all over the country, who she kept in close contact with over long phone calls and frequent social media connections.

All are cordially invited to a visitation at the Chapman Funerals and Cremations, 98 Bedford St. Bridgewater on Thursday, Oct. 3rd from 4-6 pm. A funeral service will begin at 6 pm followed by a reception in Quincy.

Donations in memory of Kathleen can be sent to Embarc, Inc., the educational nonprofit where her son Joe works. embarcchicago.org
